Absolutely Devastated

My beautiful boy Bruno was attacked in the park this morning by a much bigger dog. It came from nowhere around a bend and just launched itself at my boy grabbing hold of his neck. Bruno is a big dog too but as gentle as a lamb but he tried to fight this dog off. There was blood everywhere and he was screaming at one terrible point our eyes locked and his were pleading. I tried and tried to kick the brute off him and I was yelling and yelling for help. There was nobody a sould around and the dog seemed to be alone. Then as suuddenly as it appeared it ran off and disappeared and my boy was lying mortally wounded on the ground and crying pitifully. I was still screaming and screaming for help and two men on the other side of the path heard me and came running over. They were wonderful,they picked him up between them ever so gently and we went to the flat of one of them and got his car. Bruno is now at the emergency vet's in a very, very bad way. The vet doesn't hold out too much hope as the injuries are horrendous. He is drugged up to the eyeballs so he won't be feeling pain. She has sent me home so I can clean myself up, I'm covered in b ood and told me to go back when I feel up to it and she will ease him gently on his way. I can't believe it, I can't believe it. He was well and happy this morning and now he's at death's door becasue of a vicious dog that seemed to be running around on its own. Where's the owner ????? What can I do, I can't report it to the police, they are not interested in dog on dog attacks - pity I didn't get bitten, they would have acted then. I live alone that dog was my life, my woofer I called him and now he's leaving me and he won't want too, he won't want too Oh God, Oh God. Help me Please help me. I'll never get over this, I'll see it in my minds eye for the rest of my days and I'll hear his screams. And his eyes oh God his eyes. My beautiful, friendly boy. My boy. I'm in so much pain.

Jayne - thank you for keeping us up to date. Very kind of you. I am glad that your sister is staying with you for a bit as there is no way she could possibly face this sorrow on her own.
How very kind of the two men who came to help her. They have restored a lot of faith in the goodness of most people.
'A liability' ? I can say no more about the dog or behaviour of that person. Not in polite society anyway.
Please pass on my best wishes to your sister and to you and the rest of your family. I do so hope that we have helped you all in some way.

Hello again. After reading Tora's post this morning, I should have added in my earlier post that we are trying to get the owner of the dog to pay some, if not all, of Bruno's vet bills. It's not that we can't afford to pay them ourselves, it's that we feel he needs to pay somehow for what his dog did and for being a useless dog owner - the dog had also killed two local cats and practically terrorised the neighborhood! So far we are not having much luck and we fear he won't pay, but at least we will have tried. Also, Sue is having Bruno's ashes and in a way it's giving her something to focus on as she feels she will have some of him back. I sound quite calm don't I, but believe me, I am not. I'm fuming, angry and almost as devastated as my sister. Bruno was the loveliest dog, everybody he met was drawn to him and my kids adored the ground he walked on, for his life to end prematurely like this is horrendous and my sister is struggling to get her head around it all. I probably won't post again. Just wanted to let you know what was going on. Jaynex

My cousin had some of her dog's ashes put into a necklace, which she always wears, to keep her "with her".

So sad that two dogs have lost their lives because of one irresponsible owner. I really hope he does have a conscience and offers to pay the vets bill. Thinking of you both and hope with time your sister feels like returning - she has so much support on here.

you could take him to small claims court (although it probably isn't a "small" claim) to recoup some of it.

Thank you for the updates Jayne. I'm glad that a dangerous animal has been removed, it's just a shame it was responsible for the deaths of 3 others. Something that can never be undone.
I hope someday that your sister will feel able to rejoin our community, and I hope she will find some peace eventually.

I do hope, along with everyone else who has posted, that she will find comfort in having Bruno's ashes near her.
This is such a sad happening.
Definitely the owner of the dog needs to be prosecuted. There may be some way of contacting the two cat owners and bringing a joint petition (?). They are probably grieving just as much.
I do hope it all gets resolved in a way that brings some form of peace to the pet owners and their families.

It's good to hear you are getting so much support and very moving that the two men who helped visited you both. My heart aches for you all and there is nothing more I can say that hasn't already been said. Much love. XXX
