Horse-Racing- Cruel?

To avoid disrupting Ken's thread, and to allow people to have their say...
My view is no. Because I believe mental health is just as important for animals as it is for people... and I have worked in Racing yards, Polo yards, Riding schools etc...
When you have bred an animal throughout hundreds of years to want to race, is it actually "kind" to wrap them in cotton wool instead forever? I now work with older people, and feel the same. Anything "fun" comes with some risk.
Obviously, there is no justification for cruelty or abuse, no matter what- and I doubt anyone would suggest there is.
So- horseracing? Fair or not?

Whips will never be banned totally because in the majority of cases they are a safety aid used to keep the horse moving straight - if you watch you will see a jockey pull a whip through to his other hand if a horse is veering towards another horse or the rail. Use of the whip to encourage them to go faster is very limited and most of the time is waved in the air. This...

Togo - // I note that you have a multi poster who was invited to do the same but declined the invitation. Obviously gets the self satisfaction from being a pest then. //
Pixie does not have a 'multi-poster', the site has many multi-posters and all are entitled to post as much and as often as they choose, and it is not for you offensively to guess what their motiviations for posting may be.

Anne, yes, but you know the highest fatalities are riding around the roads?
I do realise it's controversial, but realistically, if nobody had horses and they were never ridden for leisure or sport (let's not mention wars...), what would happen with them all?
Don't get me wrong, like everyone, I hate to see accidents to the point i won't actually watch racing. But in my view, there is a difference between risk and a proper life, or actual cruelty.

// In conclusion, it seems that anyone who has any idea about horses, is ok with them being allowed to race. Those that prefer them safe in a stable, or not to exist... are those who don't know them.//
You obviously do not know much about the racing industry. You think Racehorses are turned out for 10 hours a day -do you think Racehorses can race 'off grass'.
You think Racehorses are not broken in at 18 months old -just how do you think they race at two? It takes 6 months to train a horse for racing.....
Racehorses are kept in a very special way and are really well looked after -but its not a 'natural' way and for some cruelty can be involved. The racing Industry is doing a lot to address some issues -such as NH fences being more giving and more jockeys are being encouraged to pull up rather than flog the horse round for experience.
Pixie, I don't care what you know or don't know but I do care about people pretending they know and giving false info.

Well let's hope all you supporters will carry on supporting after yet another horse dies racing today... and Pixie..I do know about horses..having grown up with and ridden for years .. lots of horsey friends disagree with racing too..I expect they think about it while keeping their horses in the stable and wondering if they exist.
