It does appear that a number of ABers get upset by some of the adverts which appear on this site.

Until today, I have refrained from blocking-out adverts, which are important to AB; in the knowledge that a superb site would not survive without them.

However,I am concerned about the flashing ones which I feel could be responsible for affecting my eyesight.

Consequently, I am now resorting to 'Adblock' and suggest that the Ed examines the whole question of adverts and the effect they have on individuals.

I used to belong to another website that started to charge a small fee to administer private sections of the forum, at first it was ok because most of the members paid, but the trouble was it became to inclusive, new members didn't want to part with money without knowing what they were getting. I don't mind the adverts, I just don't see them, except that owl one, don't like that, it seems to creep around the page. I would like private messaging, it can easily be controlled, perhaps new members don't get privileges until a mod or the ed is satisfied that they are not a troll.
"could someone here be responsible if the questioner had 'paid' for the advice via subscription?"

Very good question!

"If I were paying to use the service and got trolled to the point I was suicidal (I am of a very nervous disposition) would the ed be responsible for allowing it because he has taken the trolls money and as I pay for the service I can reasonably be expected to be safe from such attacks?"

The rules would still apply! You could be a paying member and get banned.

"If the ed were to profit directly from the sound advice readily given and trusted by some of the contributors should they be paid?"

No :)

"There would be no new members and it would become a closed group. Eventually people would get bored and the numbers would dwindle."

The idea is it would be an option for those who don't want adverts, not everyone. It would be free to use advert supported, but there would be an option.

If you're going down the route of having an Ad blocker blocker, then yes, I do like the idea of a SMALL subscription, especially if subscribers are given perks (cakes in my case), but like I said, it'd have to be a small enough fee for me to be able to afford and justify paying it.

Thanks for clarifying.

oooo Swizzlers!

;-)
So AB will become the online equivalent of Tesco's 'Value' and 'Finest' ranges...
I'd like to have private messaging back. Trolls were never an issue with that. You choose who to talk to, and you can say 'no' to invitations from others.

To be honest, I think the adverts thing is a fuss over nothing. Few appear to be willing to pay enough to make up the shortfall that would exist without the adverts - and imagine the extra administration something like that would necessarily engender. Why not just accept that, to survive, the site needs to carry adverts - and live with it? It's not that difficult.
Yes, I think the advert blocker blocker is the way forward.
"the adverts thing is a fuss over nothing."

Yes :)

I am hoping NOX will come back and offer me an answer (to whom my original subscription question was posed). If the answer is: "I want to block ads and I wouldn't pay" then I don't know what to say really :)
Just out of curiosity, approx. how much revenue per year is generated from all the adverts?
Ed, the fact is, you're not running a charity - you're running a business - and businesses are in the 'business of business' to generate income. If people don't understand that, then they need to think about it a bit more. It's as simple as that.

Well, my bonus last year was some more straw for bedding.
Ha ha! I'm never really stroppy B00 - I just like things straight. :o)
I think members of the Site supported religion should be exempt from any charges of course
Or should they pay Tithes?
if you get that offended by ads, use a browser that allows the blocking of them

I see no ads, anywhere, any time, any place
