Upsetting Adverts.

It does appear that a number of ABers get upset by some of the adverts which appear on this site.

Until today, I have refrained from blocking-out adverts, which are important to AB; in the knowledge that a superb site would not survive without them.

However,I am concerned about the flashing ones which I feel could be responsible for affecting my eyesight.

Consequently, I am now resorting to 'Adblock' and suggest that the Ed examines the whole question of adverts and the effect they have on individuals.

Rowan, what do you mean? That the Ed should just go around with the collection plate and hope for the best? :o)

Its a modern church thing apparently no collections they get you to sign up for regular donations by direct debit... officially they say you should give a tithr (tenth) of your income The church of the apotheosis might offer a few bananas I suspect

post it notes all over your screen, you can adjust them to block out the trolls as well

come on admit it my system is the best (esp if you get the post its in deff sizes and colour, you can make art then as well)

I honestly never even notice the ads, I just read the posts and answer them, I have never read one advert so they don't distract me.

Annna - we like to remove noisy adverts. So if you could let us know what the ad was for we might be able to work out what it is an block it. We can't manually look at every ad before it is published however, so we need everyone to help spot them :)

I never have the sound on my computer unless I want to hear something. I can concentrate more when its quiet anyway. The ads dont bother me too much, I just find the moving ones annoying

It's a very difficult question regarding ads, I do see your need for them, but most sites don't choose to block adblocker even if they rely on ads for revenue, it's that that I have the issue with. The problem with paying a subscription ( I wouldn't personally mind a small subscription) is that you aren't exactly providing a service, if anything you are mining your members skills and talents and you don't provide anything that isn't free elsewhere, so how keen most people would be on that I really don't know. A small subscription is fine by me, but equally I'd prefer it if you simply didn't block adblocker since your advertisers won't have a clue whose using it and who isn't, so it seems a slightly unnecessary thing to be doing tbh.

We sell ads by "impressions" so every page with ads you look at is worth an impression for that ad space - if those impressions don't get counted (because you're using adblocker) we lose "inventory". It's most like going into a restaurant taking up a table, just drinking complimentary water, then leaving.

I understand your concerns however and the whole thing with ad-supported sites is it can sometimes feel a bit "dirty".

I also love the idea we're not providing a service :)
