what were these books called?!

I remember reading 2 books a friend lent to me, and I can't remember for the life of me what they were called or the name of the guy that wrote them, so I'm hoping someone recognises the plot.

They were "real-life" memoirs of a drug addict and his time in a Minnesota rehab clinic. His first book mostly covered his time in rehab and the second one covered working for this gangster type guy he met in the rehab place. I remember they were written as true stories, but he later admitted he made some of it up to make his experiences seem more interesting and there was a bit of an outcry.
