a children's book

I read a book in the 1970's. It was about a girl who went to live in a house where there was a bloodstain on the floor of something like a garage. A girl had been murdered there years before, I think and there was a whip and spinning top involved. Does anyone know the name of this book. I'm sure it was set in England.
