Have fun trying, I've known some people to try for 2 years and finally get there....lots of people say they give up after trying and go back on the pill...surely if you can't get pregnant when not on the pill what's the point of going back on the pill...
This is one of those ‘how long is a piece of string’ questions.
Some people get lucky straight away, for others it’ll never happen and there may not even be a reason for this. The obvious things apply, cut down or give up alcohol and smoking and try to make sure you’re not over or underweight.
If the lady has been on the pill it can take 6 mths to a year for it to come out of her system, and this may can affect her cycle/fertility. They say to have sex every 2-3 days, as it is thought to be beneficial for sperm to have a high ‘turnover’. The most fertile time for a woman is 14 days before her period is due. Make sure you have sex everyday from a few days before to a few days after this time.
As for seeking medical advice, the general consensus is that GPs will expect you to have been trying for 1 year (some will expect 2 years if you are still young), however if the woman is over 35, some may refer for tests after 6mths.
Good luck and most of all, keep it fun!
The above is good advice, my husband & I tried for 3 months & we are now expecting our 1st baby. Not meaning to sound smug when I say that, but we were shocked at how quickly it took especially as I am well into my 30's. I had asked my GP before hand how long we should give it before asking for advice & he said 6 months
We would have been clueless as to how to maximise our chances without the help of some excellent websites that help predict (roughly) when a woman is most fertile in her cycle & what signs to look for. Try a search on the internet for fertility hints, I liked

All the very best of luck. Try not to get too down heartened.
