Ovary removal/HRT
22 Answers
I had to have one ovary removed a few weeks ago due to an abscess rupture. I'm now fit and well, but a few people have mentioned that I might need HRT; I've been feeling ok in that respect, I don't feel menopausal or anything, but my family say they have noticed that I'm a bit of a 'short fuse' now?? I've been told it may bring the menopause on very quickly/early. I'm almost 42 and not really felt any menopausal symptoms, apart from the odd night sweat. Would it be worth seeing my doc?

What would you expect him to do?

How about giving it a little more time.....say....6 months and if you are still feeling well, then no Dr. visit will be necessary.

Meg. I lost one ovary when I was twenty one...ectopic pregnancy. I was fine with one until I was in my early thirties and had to have a hysterectomy. I asked for the other ovary to be removed but the surgeon only took half to prevent an early menopause. That didn`t work and I was very poorly until I went on HRT. It was wonderful. I stayed on it for about twenty five years and never regretted or worried about being on it for so long.
Do see your doctor and I think there are tests they can do now which I was never offered. Sqad will be more informed but don`t suffer.

gness........I take your point, but the above comments do not give me the impression that she is "suffering."

Thanks gness. I know there are tests they can do to check if you are going through it - as I had them done a year or two back, but it turned out to be a side effect of an anti depressant I was taking at the time, which I've since ceased.
I think I'll wait a bit longer; the night sweats don't bother me, but if I feel my moods fluctuate too much, then I'll get concerned as I don't want to be making those around me miserable - I've done that before!

Point taken Sqad. Realised you would pick up on /suffering/ but meant in the future as I know Meg is well now. I am probably a bit touchy on this subject having had two years of hell and almost loosing a gorgeous husband while being told I was too young to be menopausal at thirty two. Driving my car into a pedestrian who was in my way convinced my doctor I was no longer the sweet calm Gness he knew. HRT brought her back! But as I say, touchy subject for me and I respect your advice to Meg who really shouldn`t consider HRT on my say so `though I would put it in the water supply.:-)
Meg, I'm very pleased to see you posting again as I was worried by your disappearance after this post, and am glad it all got sorted out in the end - I hope you were not too long in hospital.

Normally one can get by with just one ovary - it rather depends on your age and how well the remaining ovary functions.
I think there is evidence that menopause may come a little sooner though.

Thanks Slaney. Yes it was a nasty business, I was taken in to hospital after the abscess ruptured, sending the infection throughout. Had the op, which wasn't too bad but it was the recovery days after which were just awful, after a week they let me out and I've been resting up since - back to work this week. They said the abscess was caused by the coil/IUD, which was overdue to be taken out - my fault, for leaving it so late, but to be honest I forgot it was there, it was only when they attempted to remove it the problems started.

Hi Meg I found myself getting moody and emotional a few years ago at 48 so went to Docs to be told I was going through the menopause which myself and my partner suspected.
My guy is a great believer in herbal products which over the years helped his cancer and a heart problem.
I have always been a bit cynical however open to suggestions, so with his knowledge I started taking Dong Quai and this really has got my hormones well balanced, at times I have a lift from St Johns Wort because as a women we do take on a lot of roles and things can get us down.
I really do feel the benefits from these tablets more than I imagined I could.
Keith will offer advice to anyone where he can and I also started having some joint problems and take a tablet called Celadrin which is also in a cream rub form and this really helps.
