It may sound bizarre but get a brown paper bag and breathe slowly into that, it works and makes you concentrate on steadying your breathing.
Of course go and see your GP just in case there is another underlying cause but if you feel active and healthy most of the time I cant see there is anything to worry about but of course get it confirmed.
Sherby - are you taking BetaBlockers? I was prescribed ProPranalol and had the same think as you describe. Needless to say I came off those tablets pretty sharpish! The tablets caused mild panic attacks in me (ironic as for other patients they are prescribed to CURE panic attacks [for me they were for headaches]). Consider what medication you have been taking and read the side effects list again.
I'm sure it'll be something trivial causing it. I really do know that it doesn't FEEL trivial in the slightest when it is happening though. Good luck!
If you are substantially overweight, you are at increased risk for heart problems. Again, make an appointment ASAP, and make sure you tell the secretary what your symptoms are, so they can get you in quickly.
I hope it is just a panic attack.
