Hospital Records

Is it only on Casualty and Holby City that hospital Doctors can get in touch with another hospital and get details of a patients records or have them send records over, or can it really be done? I have been in Hospital both as a patient and a visitor and have never seen a Doctor wandering about with an ipad or what ever they are.

I was taken ill in Torbay
and had a page from a discharge summary from Hope Manchester
and the doctor was able to get hold of enough of my history.

I said I cd be anyone - and he said no - it is obvious that you are the person in the notes - [and then said o my god good luck]

Yes can really be done, say if you are not admitted to your local hospital. Their was meant to be a plan to computerise all NHS records but think that went over budget and was shelved.
When Mrs Tony was recently in hospital, lots of her routine test results were recorded on iPad.

I've recently had 5 nights in hospital. All of the medical staff, whether assistant nurses, nurses, doctors, consultants or anyone else, used a mobile phone app to enter the results of tests, etc into the system and to look up the results of tests carried out by other staff. i.e. everything was recorded digitally, with no paper charts, etc.

Similarly, when I arrived in an ambulance, the handover procedure largely consisted of an ambulance technician connecting his box of tricks to the Emergency Department's computer system, so that the results of all the test carried out en route to the hospital were readily available to ED staff.

I'm sure that, if it had become necessary to transfer me to a different hospital, all of the data could have been transferred within seconds, so that it would be available on the mobile phone app used by staff in the second hospital.

Yes, it really is all done digitally these days!

my friend's son became a heart consultant about 2 years ago and I asked my friend - who's who, don't know the difference.

She said the person wearing the stethoscope is the doctor.

I'm much better than I was (although, as I wasn't far from being dead, that's probably not too difficult!). I still tire quite quickly but, other than that, I'm almost back to what passes as 'normal' for me ;-)

Thanks to you all, I cant be as observant as I thought I was, I will be going to Hospital again soon so will be sure to notice more of what goes on with phones and so forth.

Its certainly not like Casualty in our local hospital. Friend was waiting 12 hours in extreme pain, when he decided to leave, they didnt chase him into the car park to persuade him to come back like they would have on Casualty, no they just wanted him to sign a waiver!

I think its all on computer now , any time I have had to phone NHS 24 they have asked me "Is it ok for us to look at your records" which they do and they have all the info they need .

and lasted 11 d outside Hospital - this man is made of iron (with a gooey brain if you get my meaning)

Goodness , even the person who comes round to ask you what you would like for dinner even enters it into a handset, does not mean you get what you asked for right enough lol. One day I got macaroni and cheese plus baked beans , I thought I don't remember asking for that !

I had to go to A&E/out-of-hours doctor after being attacked be vicious wild animal.

They asked me if it was okay if they looked at my medical records. I asked if anyone actually refused the medical staff's request for access.

I was told that some people did but they usually change their minds when advised that they couldn't be treated k properly without access.

Yes people are very odd sometimes,

i know the hospital staff have to ask but for example if you go there with stomach cramps and they say "could i just have a look at your tummy?" You would be pretty silly to say "no you can't!" Wouldn't you? Though i bet some do.
