Tooth Extraction

Had a large back molar extracted in hospital yesterday, after fainted and threw up when the dentist tried to do it.

Sedation was fantastic - remember then putting the canula in, then woke up in recovery room with no memory of what had happened.

Thought it was too good to last!

After a day feeling pleasantly woozy and taking painkillers a couple of times, it is clear everything has worn off now!

Mouth swollen like it is full of ball-bearings, too sore to touch, feels like someone is attacking the cavity with a jackhammer, pain is total!

Not much sleep tonight I fear …

take your pain killers regulary - esp if you are sleepless - you can cram in 6 g paracetamol between now and 9 am
and also start on ibuprofen

take regularly even if the pain is subsiding

erm and that is about it

Sounds like a wisdom tooth then .I'm surprised they didn't provide some pain relief medication.

You have to keep the painkillers topped up and not let them ware off.

I had a took out on Monday and it didn’t hurt a bit. Even afterwards.

You might have a dry socket - it's really, really painful when that happens. Ring the dentist - if you have to go back they usually put a dressing in and the pain should stop immediately. I sympathise.

Alcohol, even if it's taken through a straw if need be.

Agree with keeping meds topped up, Hellywelly has a good point - it should be tender but not agony.

If no better in the morning, make contact.

Ugh, as per the others, contact whoever removed it for advice. Strange the way different people react, I had upper right wisdom tooth out a month ago, under local, in and out of the dentist’s room in under 30 mins with only a slight ache the next day!

I had 3 wisdom teeth out in the 80s, meant to have had 4 taken out, but the one was too near the sinuses, so they left it. Said it probably wouldn't cause any trouble because it was very high up...Any way, had to go in hospital for general anaesthetic. Face like a hamster for a week or so. Strong co-formal really helped with pain. Hope your pain is a little more easier today Andy.

Yeah...a few months back. It was a wisdom tooth that didn't grow properly so it was just a point. It kept catching on the lower teeth which made it wobbly. It was causing me pain and you know what it's like, you can't help prodding it. It just became loser and loser. The relief when I got it out was immediate.

Because it had been wobbly for so long the gum had almost healed around it so it wasn't painful.

Perfectly healthy tooth as well but a bit useless.
