Whenever someone posts about the present virus on here there's a percentage that seem to want to label them as being either hysterical or going into panic mode for no reason. Some people do worry a lot more than others. With this particular virus I for one can understand their worry. I cannot ever remember in my 69 years of ever seeing such a virus spread around the world at such a pace.

In my view the posters that like to come across as not being bothered, or the virus is being blown all out of proportion are more than likely more concerned than the ones that openly admit to being worried.

If its correct that government have decided to withhold where there's new outbreaks, or bigger clusters, this maybe to combat any area panic, this I would think would be a very bad Idea and would contribute to even more going down with the virus, if you know there's a bigger out break in your area you can then take even more caution of what you do, and were you decide to go, and even increase more washing of hands.

A good example of the need to know is, My mom is 99 years old, she's not been out her home for the last 4 years, she as no wish to do so as she's happy indoors,. Her health is good (for her age) her chances of catching the virus therefore is very reduced as she don't go out.
If I don't know that my area is rampant with the virus/ or more so in my area I can't make a risk assessment of weather I should go to see her, she is still self caring and does very well on her own, I don't want to be the one to kill her off after all these years, at the moment I see her once every two weeks, in between by phone, and there must be many situations like mine, she lives 25 mile from me.

Conclude don't be so hard on people who post about this virus, they may live on their own and be very worried, they may only have this site to talk too with no family.

Complaceny leads to "too little too late" precautions. The virus has been around for months but only last Monday did our lazy smug Government start to address it. And with what - minor remedies like washing your hands more often, stay away from crowds (and the latest this evening, the two teams playing in the F A Cup will not shake hands before the match -...

Sorry teacake, I have an opinion and it doesn't tally with yours, so how dare you come on telling me off ?!! I repeat, it's scaremongering and it's a proven fact that more people die of the ordinary flu, as has been reported on here on other threads. Too many threads banging on about coronavirus and if I want to give an opposing view, then I will !

Conclude I will be as 'hard' as I like.
If I was a fit 73 I would do the same Bobbi, but I'm not unfortunately.
Oh and if all the supermarket shelves become empty because of idiots panic buying, I'll be bloody fuming !!!
I’ve never bought anything more than I would ordinarily, in fact people who do this are selfish I think !
Bloke on the Jeremy Vine show said he has stock piled - toilet rolls, sweets, hand sanitiser etc etc. Apparently got enough to last a year. No wonder shelves are emptying, totally selfish IMO
It certainly is selfish and I hope supermarkets put something in place to stop it from escalating ..
Absolute lunacy

I don't think we can compare how many died of flu last year or the year before with Covid-19 because we haven't had it for a year yet.
Face masks almost impossible to get.
The only ones I could find were a giraffe or a monkey.
Get the giraffe one, has more neck.
And a very long sore throat.
It's interesting too that they giraffe's have the same number of cervical vertebrae as humans - seven.
That's stretching things a bit.
naomi....focussed in the face of danger, that's me.
I am not panicking, one thing that would help is an early warm spring, corona types are fairly fragile and die in hotter drier conditions. Fresh air and increased ultra violet also helps . As for stockpiling I might get an extra box of teabags.. I'm English give me tea I can cope with anything.
Oh I've had enough of these ruddy scaremongering threads and panic buying idiots. People are so stupid !!! You'll all feel pretty stupid when it all blows over, as it will ….
It will blow over but we dont know how long it will take to do so. Neither does the WHO. And don't forget its a new virus so nobody has immunity. A lot different from the flu virus where things cannot be predicted. There is no excuse for stockpiling though, but it is worrying for those who are old or in poor health, whether it be yourself or vulnerable relatives and friends.

I am a bit worried because paracetamol is in short supply and being stockpiled. It's the only painkiller I can take safely and I have chronic pain.
Rowanwitch, lol, OH came home with a box of tea bags last night, he rarely goes into a supermarket! Also bought himself an emergency bar of chocolate!
Panic buying is totally selfish. It will also affect the old and infirm.
This virus is being blown up out of all proportion by the media and many people are going along with all the panic that has ensued. Sad really.
^ Well said.
What about this - in 2018, 4,655 people were diagnosed with TB in England.

No-one seems to be panicking about that.

The epicentre of TB on the planet is India, but no-one is talking about stopping flights in and out of the sub-continent.

Scares like this are catnip to the media, and they are making the most of it.

The fact is, the majority of people will ignore the government's advice about hand-washing and so on.

This virus will spread, peak, and die away again.

We should keep a sense of proportion.
