Sorry, I should have added that you have to apply for an exemption certificate from your local Health Authority. Your doctor's surgery should be able to help you there.
I hate to contradict grannyg but diet controlled diabetes doesn't qualify you for free prescriptions - only treated ie tablets or insulin controlled diabetes.
Sorry to disagree with Granny but diet controlled does not qualify. This is due to the fact that the "special "diet will not cost any more than a "normal" one and prescription for insulin and tablets do have a very high cost . If I had to pay for my insulin and other items, needles, lancetts and not to mention the glucometer, it would cost me about 400/month. You may be eligible for another discount off meds. speak to your GP he/she can give the best advice,Good luck.
Hans_Olo and bob72 are correct. It's infuriating to have to take a cocktail of medication every day for various complaints, AND have type2 diet-controlled diabetes, and still not qualify for free prescriptions mainly because of my wife's earnings. Being unable to work due to being on Incapacity Benefit rules you out of free prescriptions but if I was registered as unemployed but fit for work they would be free! OK...I do buy a pre-payment certificate but it damn well annoys me when I see the queues of idiots waiting for their free Methadone. What a crazy country this is.
