To continue from Elvis. Is it only Coventry ( in a few chippys) that sell faggotts & peas. I dont live there but when I ask in our local chippys they look at me like I'm from outa space... Anyone else got faggots. Or something different. ???

Don'thave them here in Sussex, but very popular in Somerset when I visit some family.

They are fantastic.

In fact I like the Mr. Brains ones you can get from Waitrose.

My friend is a butcher & he makes his own they are the best & I know exactly what he puts in them...no nasty bits. hankering for some now...yum

"Nasty bits". I see no difference in eating the thigh or belly of a pig. cow sheep etc or the penis, kidney, brain, intestine etc. God gave us meat to eat. Personally I love all the offal stuff (except tripe!!!!!!!!!!!)

no not eaten a heart.. I do like pate' but not foir gra ( cant spell it ) !!... I like liver ( burnt) but not kidney.
Its just that old wifes tale of bits like eye balls & toe nails in things.. prob not tru tho.

Stuffed lambs hearts, Wardy? absolutely delicious! I haven't had any in a while, but spotted some in Sainsburys the other day so may well treat myself.

As for faggots..my mother used to make her own too. As Wardy says, no sign of any here in Sussex but plentiful in the West Country.

My local chippy, although wonderful, has only just started selling gravy.

There is a very good Portugese chippy in Worthing, just off a roundabout on a parade of shops. Top of a road leading off from the seafront near to Goring. Any ideas?

well pippa...they did a town vote on the best chippy here & the one that won does do the best fish admittedly...but they dont do cuury sauce & their peas are not mushy just marrowfat...that not right. & they use the really small tubs.meanies. Is it just me or does anyone else like curry sace on their fish in batter, YUM

cockroach ~ my local is fantastic. Apparently customers come from all over the south east to eat his wares.. no old oil, big portions and his peas are MUSHY as well as contained in big pots :o)

I like my curry sauce on chips, peas & S&K pie..not often, but I like it!

What I used to love, and only seems available in the midlands, is potato scallops, thick slices of potato dipped in batter. Yum! Haven't had any in years.
I love the daft names they give fish and chip shops - our local is 'Chip 'n' Tails' and I've come across one in Cornwall called 'Chips Ahoy'

One of our local chippies does the poato scallops,but I like making my own, grandchildren love them. When I was young we had a chippy that made what they called "John Bulls". Like the Scallops (Dabs we caled them )two slices of potato with mince beef in the middle then dipped in batter and fried.I make them from time to time.

around here they sell roe and chips..... but if you go into stoke they look at you all weird when you ask for it.

stokeys (chipeaters) have pudding and chips which is lovely but we cant get it here in our chippies??

The finest pudding, chips, peas & gravy I have ever eaten was when I lived in Manchester.

Any chipy in the south I have been to just doesn't do it for me!

Pippster, after studying a map, I believe the Portugese chippy is on the junction with Goring Road (A259) and George V Avenue. Well worth a visit.

What is your favourite one in worthing you mentioned?

Hi Wardy..yes I know the one :o) I didn't get to visit yesterday, but as fish & chips are on the menu tonight I shall try them.

The one I use is Oxfords..on Clifton Road (the Clifton Pub is on the corner) just off the main Tarring Road. You usually have to wait around 15 minutes or so as he cooks everything fresh to order. Well worth it, though.
