Does anyone else sometimes wish we could go back to the days when you went to your corner shop for six egges and when you cooked them for breakfast they were nearly always double yolkers, the bacon came with rind on, that you cooked then cut off for the wild birds, and if you wanted to make a phone call you used a red telephone box, or is it just me? Im sure it was a much slower pace of life too.

You were not likely to have a phone at home either. You certainly wouldn't have a computer or the internet.

No, my parents never had a car . If we wanted to go anywhere we caught a bus, or walked!
OK well you were very lucky then, most couldn't afford any of those luxurys
Question Author
We definately had a phone at home. The neighbours used to come round to use it.
Was it a party line Georgiesmum ?, ours was.
im not too worried about cars as i've never owned one but you can't compare tv/phone/washing machine in the 50's to what we have available to us now
We had a phone in the pub but my granddad used to make me use the phone box outside.

This one wasnt Tonyav, but when we moved to the next house it was a party line, yes.
I think the line rental was cheaper if you had a party line, if I remember correctly.

LOL
Food that had some taste in it yesterday unlike today

No Supermarkets-The biggest curse over the last 50 years when we had real food shops like butchers ,bakers greengrocers etc

Virtually no crime in the 1950's

People much more friendly
I remember a group of women used to come into a local bar near where I worked at around tea time and wait for phone calls from their husbands/sons who were away working in England.
I think we look at the past through rose coloured glasses.
wow a washing machine in the 50's! we didnt have a washing machine until 1986 lol!
I remember most of things people people have mentioned and while there were some thing that were great there was a lot of crap for instance I remember best bitter at 1/3d a pint, I also remember a kid down the road dying of polio. I tend to agree with sandy we've all got selective memories.
I miss many things from 'the good old days' including people with manners, and well-brought up children, not the spoiled brats you see everywhere today.

I could live without all modern conveniences except a washing machine. And I too don't own a mobile.
virtually no crime in the 50's...... oh dear
Had the wheel been invented by then?
It looks like everyone here who sees the '50s as some ideal, were children then. Memories of childhood are always idealised(unless it was a bad time)...ask those who were adults at the time-most will not see it as some sort of golden age,I'm sure. It was easier in the US-but many of you must have grown up with rationing, etc. Hard tiimes really.
