The beans are there to add some protinaceous element to a vegetarian dish. Sweet potatoes I'm not fond of, but I do like some ordinary spuds. It's not quite mediterranean summer soup, but it's a good filling meal.
Carrots, onions, meat, celery, leeks, swede, or turnips, dumplings, stock plus in beef stew a tin of oxtail soup and in chicken a can of chicken soup, lamb some pea and mint usually packet cup soup as I usually keep some in the store cupboard towards the end chuck in peas, any left over beans, or lentils. Basically if it's sitting in the fridge and needs using up ....
roadman. Scrub your celeriac, top and tail it, pull or shop off any wispy roots or bits you don't like the look of, slice it into 'steaks' and simmer a bit before draining and frying or roasting. Serve with an Italian type sauce (tinned chopped toms, garlic etc) Celeriac is a tyope of celery root, and has a celery-ish flavour.
