What a generation he represented. The sort of gent I could have listened to for many an hour. Interestingly he didn't say that war was senseless but he got a lot out of it from what was shown in that clip. Compared to many of today's younger generation, well - it makes my blood boil how people behave these days. Thanks for posting, TTT - a very worthy thread.

very popular - GayByrne now dead

Big thing about the irish fighting for the Brits - like national denial altho 180 000 signed up. One modern little thing asked why men volunteered to fight for the King of England and the fella answered: "I can think of three things a day"

Either PBS or smithsonian is doing recycled Great War 1964 footage ( off cuts etc)
Jack Campbell didn't need a good interviewer to draw him out but he certainly had one of the best there anyway
.

Thanks Jack and your brothers and pals too.
Gabriel Mary "Gay" Byrne was an Irish presenter and host of radio and television. His most notable role was first host of The Late Late Show over a 37-year period spanning 1962 until 1999. The Late Late Show is the world's second longest-running chat show.

He was a very handsome man IMO

Don't focus on the negatives.

I have through my life and working with my Father in the RBL met many men like Jack and their calm considered descriptions of such horrors are very humbling.

choux, can you imagine the saucepans today? they have a fit if the battery in their Iphone is dead. He lied about his age to sign up! I love the way he brushes Byrne aside when he tries to get political. I'd love to spend hours talking to, well just listening to bloke like that. BA.
WWI was pretty senseless, to be fair. That isn't of course the fault of the people who seved in it, nor of those who commanded tham.

Ireland was part of the British Empire at that time.
By 1939-45 Ireland was officially neutral, but as we all know many thousands of Free State citizens fought against Hitler, and many more thousands more again seved in a non-military capacity.

I'm sure many non-irish people will recognise Gay Byrne

Not sure what sort of comments you want ...

yeah, mamy, 18:40, shame PP and maggie choose to take the peece. Not and ounce of honour in their gutless facades.
That's a shame TTT, I know young people who have great strength of character and plenty of respect for people like Jack, sorry you don't.

ich: "WWI was pretty senseless, to be fair." - yes perhaps, what was the alternative?
I think Maggie may have missed what your thread was about and what topic it was in Tora, I wouldn't worry.
Thank heavens there are such records, whether on film or in books of what these old soldiers did for us all. Long may we have Remembrance Sunday and the like. It is all about respect and gratitude.

You asked for comments and you got them.

Your, "usual anti British BS" comment is repetitive and pathetic.

I'm not maggiebee's biggest fan but I'm failing to see the anti-British in her reply.
Mamya, you say not to focus on the negatives, but it makes it deliberately difficult with phrases like //choux, can you imagine the saucepans today? they have a fit if the battery in their Iphone is dead//
Entirely rubbish, no proof whatsoever... and just distracts from the apparent point.

War probably inevitable at some point.
Ben Elton’s novel A Moment In Time is fantasy fiction but fascinating and food for thought nonetheless.
Would there have been a civil war in Britain had Germany not reared its head as a common enemy to England and northern Protestants?
Who knows?
