Prince Edward? The queen's youngest child? I'm no royalist, but surely I should've heard of him somewhere. Oh the reason I brought this up was because it was a question in a quiz which I got right by guessing, even though I hadn't a clue.

He has already taken over the DoE award scheme I believe, and is likely to be the next person to hold the title. Sophie has become a sort of spare lady in waiting and often accompanies the Queen and they do seem very close. After their earlier 'issues' they seem to have settled down and quietly carry on with their duties.

I think it took far more strength than he is given credit for to say this is not right for me and step away from his commando training knowing he would face appalling press and ridicule that any other young man in that situation would not have endured.
Sticky, that is quite possible.
sqad, \\ Sticky, he was a right waste of space and a waster before he went into the Marines, served in Northern Ireland....two tours of duty and then in Norway in SBS .//

Are you saying Prince Edward was in the Special Boat Service?
prince Edward ?
is hew now a common'tata ?
Vulcan, no, I was talking about my eldest son in reply to Sticky's post.
sqad, thank you for the clarification. Kudos to your son, anybody in the SBS or SAS has my total respect.
Vulcan, thanks....my youngest son was attached to a S.A.S unit in the Gulf War, whilst in the Paras.
Sqad (and others) when you say they were 'attached' to a unit does that mean that they were soldiers within the unit?

Or does it mean non-shooting roles like doctor, padre, filing clerk, helicopter pilot or (the best one) a dog handler?

Apart from my dad being a butcher in the army in Berlin during the airlifts, doing his National Service, I don't know any military people.
I don't know how you've never managed to hear of him. The Wessex's (I think that's them) live quietly now, but he was once all over the news, working for Andrew Lloyd-Webber and trying to make a career in showbiz.
wolf in this particular case, he was in the Para's, then transferred to the R.A.M.C and as such attached to the S.A.S but maintaining his R.A.M.C uniform.

I am not a military man, but someone will come on and give a better explanation.
Stickbottle & Sqad - my cousin was also a 'waste of space' until his dad said 'The Army or you're out of this family. He also joined the Marines and served in N. Ireland in the '70, as well as Borneo and other places. It was definitely the making of him. After that he became a respected Prison Officer.
jourdain....LOL.....that is a similar story to my son, seeing him in the passing out parade...in Kent somewhere....made me proud, something I could never have done.
