re my question earlier ,could the cauliflower heads be turning red because they are planted next to beetroots? would be grateful for any advise.

Confess to not knowing, but it sounds rather unlikely to me.

If you are getting this, could it not be a simple throwback to a red ancestor of the modern day white cauli ?
Sorry apparently that should be purple not red ;-)

I have had cauliflowers take on a reddish tinge when they have been stressed during the growing season mainly due to poor weather conditions.
Many cauliflower varietals will naturally take on a reddish hue... maybe even purplish. Doesn't hurt them, but if you want snow white heads, simply grab a length of string and tie up some of the leaves over the heads. Called "blanching" here in the U.S. and works great to keep them creamy white...
