I've been told that it is not a good idea to plant anything in ground where onions were grown the previous year. Is this correct?

Its never a good idea to plant the same crop in the same place two years running though as it allows for a buildup of pests and diseases as well as depleting the soil

Good idea to rotate crops to avoid attracting that plants pests. And not planting a similar plant either. But aside from that, no real issue. Do ensure nutrition replacement if you want best results.
