housemate 'rules'...
45 Answers
this is not about me...
but reading some stuff online an knowing from past experience how people have set ideas about how things should be done and most totally believe that their way is normal, correct and how everyone does it ...so when someone doesn't adhere they are shocked...
so just wanted to to see your view on these -
toilet LID - not seat - to me that just gets left up...but to some its weird to not close it after use...and makes some angry
and dishes in sink - i always put them on the side of the sink as i hate it when the sink gets clogged up with dirty dishes an food and cannot be used for anything else - even sometimes you cannot even fill glass or kettle properly...to me it makes sense to put to the side untill you actually intend to wash them
what do you think?
to you what is 'normal and correct'?

I don't worry about what other flat mates are doing because I'm not a great flat mate myself in that sense. I think as long as you can see that someone has tried to be thoughtful, then even if it's not the way you should do it, you should let some things go. (Not really bad things obviously, just a sense of perspective and all that).
Not bothered about the toilet lid and I'd rather the dishes were in the sink rather than sitting with food going hard on them - makes them much harder to wash. But the one thing I truly cannot abide is doors being left open. If I'm sitting in a room the door MUST be closed, I can't relax at all if it's not. Case in point, my cat has just come into the room and I'm starting to get really pi$$ed off typing this because I can see that the door is open. I need to get up now to close it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Can't remember those kind of things annoying me in the many houseshares I've lived in, am pretty easygoing. Examples of things I remember getting to me were one guy who used to leave the door on the latch so people he got on with next door would just walk in, feeling sick at the overpowering smell of dope in the mornings, inviting some creepy guy to stay etc... and of course dirty stuff like leaving dishes unwashed etc... takes a lot to really wind me up in that way! Oh the joys of cheap houseshares!
I'm not sure if I could share a house again after my last house mates. if it got a little cold the heating would be turned on full blast (thermostat up full) then when it started to get hot all the windows would be thrown open (heating still on with thermostat up full)
The £400 gas bill was lovely that quarter, especially when they refused to pay a share as they reckoned it was too much!!

Lid always down, as it's unhygenic to flush with it up, and totally with you on the dishes. EVERYTHING annoyed me living with housemates, hence why I'm back at my mum's and have no plans to leave (unless I win the lottery or land a brilliant job!). :) I think I'm slightly TOO considerate, though, if one can be? Always felt like I was living on edge not wanting to upset anyone, so it's probably my hang-ups.
