Recently the wife joined ebay and paypal as well. Everything was fine and her Paypal account was verified. She did the bank account thing and the phone call. Everything looked fine. Then she decided to buy something on ebay. This is when the moronic Paypal decided to restrict her account and stop her sending money and only decided to tell her after she commited to buy. Luckily the seller was fairly understanding and has given us more time to pay, but I am livid with paypal. Is this normal for new accounts? What's the point of it if new members can't bloody use it? She got an email today asking her to upload a copy of her passport, but there is no option on the site to do this. Any ideas how long this could last before we can use the account? thanks.

There was a link asking me to Log In and reconfirm my bank details. Needless to say I did no such thing and have used PayPal perfectly well since.

She hasn't joined a scam site. She has definitely joined Paypal. And the emails she received were from [email protected] which seems pretty legit to me.
Whatever you do, don't give any further details. this email is probably a scam. Paypal would never ask for this sort of information in an email. NEVER. Forward it to [email protected] They will respond immediately . If you want to ring them, i believe the phone number is 08707 307 191.

OK. This is not a scam. I am sure. The emails were sent to her by name. She accessed the site via ebay and by typing in the address. The Paypal site itself has a section about how to upload a copy of your passport. I just wanted to know how long it takes for the site to resolve these things. Thanks for your answers,
Contrary to some of the (no doubt) well meant comments on here, Paypal can and do sometimes ask for proof of identity such as copies of driving licences or if they're not available then copies of passports. I know this because it happened to me several years ago following a mix-up with my email address/password. It took me ages to withdraw my own eighty pounds from my own paypal account. (this is a very long story cut short BTW.)
The reason it all took so long is that I don't have a driving license and my passport had expired (they said they couldn't accept the expired passport). One of their agents said I could send a copy of birth certificate. So I spent half a day in the attic looking for the certificate only to be told by the next paypal agent that they don't in fact accept copies of birth certificates!! My account was only fully reinstated after I renewed my passport and sent them a copy.
Paypal is legally required to have security measures in place to prevent 'laundering' of large amounts of money or transfer of large funds from Middle East for obvious reasons.
Asking for these type of personal details for small amounts is going overboard. Would you really send passport or birth certificate copy in an email????
