At this time of the morning things can seem much worse than they really are, especially at Christmas when we are supposed to be happy. We all feel down and at a loss as to what to do at times. Your job and money situation may be rubbish at the moment but you are safe, with a comfortable home and good friends and family. Slap a smile on your face, join in and help those...

Abbey/ You have the Christmas meal out to look forward tonight so cheer up.  Have you decided which outfit to wear?

Instead of going out why don't you make a meal for your mum and dad?

Question Author

I'm going for meal next week now

Was everywhere booked up tonight, Abbey?

No my friend couldn't

With regards to the worry about having no money, I believe you should be receiving universal credit. It allows you to work part time hours and tops you up if you earn less than if you did full time hours. It also supports you while you are in between jobs as you sometimes are. When care home reduced you to 9hrs universal credit would have paid you more each week to top you up. It is an ongoing claim so you only need apply once and they adjust accordingly. You can still look for full time, but if it doesn't work out you will still have money coming in.

Universal credit is nothing to do with your mum or dad's earnings as you are adult in own right.

Apply for it.

It may be one less thing to worry about

I have signed on to that last time they said I wasn't entitled when I was on 9 hours per week

My son is 23 and at full time college but gets Universal Credit because he an adult in own right and needs money to live.

My friend who is autistic and very similar to you is on UC also and she is supply teacher but when she gets no work one week Universal credit pay her more. Then when she works full weeks they may not pay her anything- it all gets adjusted and she doesn't need to worry or do anything. She has own house and two children.

But Abbey you are working at laundry now for 3 days a week so you DO qualify and then if you had no job you would definitely qualify!!

Apply again.

Sometimes you can talk to wring person and be given wrong info. Keep trying and talk to someone new at Universal Credit helpline or application line.

Question Author

Yes they I need to get in touch with care home or find my contract incase they owe money

You don't appear to be listening. Not sure what that last message meant or why you would give that reply to my advice??!!??

Please just apply for Universal Credit based in your hours at laundry which must be around 16- 20 hours a week.

Apply! You are entitled!

Were the careers advisors you spoke with from the jobcentre?

Good golly miss molly.

'Kin 'ell

Another entitlement could be Income Support or JobSeeker's Allowance - worth looking into when you work such few hours per week.

You are right Hazlinny but I think that all previous named benefits are now just under one umbrella term known as Universal Credit. So income support etc is still assessed under the Universal Credit term.

The application is easier than you think and you can do it yourself.

Question Author

It was an advisor at job centre. I applied for universal credit online but last time they said I wasn't entitled as care home told them I was earning £1300 which I wasn't. Now I lost my job at care home I've opened a new claim they said speak to care home incase they owe money. I closed last time when I worked at HB.

Question Author

I tried to apply for PIP but said I'm not entitled to it.

The Universal Credit might even back date money if you put down every job you have had in last couple of years and you give information about home bargains, care home, warehouse, cleaning company hours which changed to Laundry hours.

Let them know all the dates and times you were out of work between jobs.

Please listen to this advice, Abbey!!

Just on 9 hours @ minimum wage Abbey would earn too much for JSA.

Abbey is currently working the laundry job which is around 20 hours a week, so would get Universal credit top up. But then if went out of work claim would already be running. JSA no longer exists - it is all under UC umbrella benefit
