Hiya, i know i can rely on you all. what is £450-10%? i have set percentage on excel. but answer comes up as 449.90. thanks x

Ok, but I do find that some well-educated people (generalisation) can't see any short comings that they might have and can't seem to cut anyone wishing to improve their skills any slack. I admire Phleb, at least she's having a crack at improving her life rather than moaning about how bad it is.

Yes, and the criticism she got was entirely unfair. What I'm saying is that it should be possible to point that out without denigrating other people...

I wasn't denigrating my husband, he will freely admit he can't spell for toffee, I wasn't denigrating myself - I know my weaknesses. I think it's important to admit these things, but that might be because we have kids (four of whom are really clever, two who are clever and one who isn't academic in the least) and I don't want them growing up to be boastful in anyway, they need to know that everyone has skills and qualities that are valuable and important. I also used to work with lots of people with (usually) pretty crap degrees who thought they were better than all the other staff around them, qualifications are all well and good, doesn't necessarily make you a nice person to be around though.

Fair enough -- but still, that's what people do a lot of the time when this happens. Also academics are an oft-misunderstood breed anyway, and that outward sign of arrogance is often just an act...

Academics often lack social skills due to their obsession with their specialities and this sometimes comes across as arrogance. Is that what you meant Jim?

Well possibly... although some are still rather social, if you give them a chance. (Others aren't, but then there are always gits if you look hard enough.)

So they give them 'superiority' lessons before they go on then? And I suppose the wardrobe dept give them the naff clobber and makeup the silly haircuts / facial growth? (And that's just the women!). I merely point out these physical absurdities to further emphasise my argument of course; not to poke fun. Naturally.

Dizmo- the ex was a very bright boy and knew it. He asked me one day if I thought he was arrogant and I said yes. He seemed genuinely surprised!
