Stay at Selco.
Try to improve your skills in whatever job they give you. If you improve they may increase your hours.
Don't listen to other staff telling you about overtime ban etc.
If you work hard you may find that you make friends and start to enjoy the work.
Don't think about getting another job—Excel at this one.
Stop jumping from job to job for petty reasons. You seem to have no problem getting a job, but you are either unable to do the work or you see a better one - you will never be happy doing this.
abbey, you need to understand that employers aren't thinking about what they can offer you - they want to know what you can offer them. They need their business to run smoothly and efficiently because that's the only way business can work. And don't forget it's their money they're spending on your wages. Put yourself in the employer's position. As an example, when you go to the hairdressers you are actually employing that hairdresser to do your hair as you want it done - and you're paying him to do that. If he doesn't do that, you'll find someone else who will do it - and that's what employers do. Why would you pay someone to do something you don't want? Employers want people they can rely on to do the job they're paying them to do, to be there when they're supposed to be there, and to be helpful and reliable at all times. If you're not committed to doing a job to the very best of your ability it's better for all that you do something else.
Due to the Budget, there may be a lot less in the way of new, entry level jobs. With the minimum wage going up, employers will be reluctant to create new positions let alone fill existing ones. For that reason I think you should jump at the chance to start with this retail job. You'll not get more hours or a different job at selco if they are not hiring. Selco is a dead end job...no-one can make a living on 10 hours a week.
One step at a time. Whether to/when to tell people (assuming you mean friends, family) shouldn't influence your "should I stay or should I go " decision.
(It just seems weird to me to keep things secret, though- you don't have to make a huge announcement but surely it's better your family and friends hear it from you and not from some other source because word gets around- although your parents you live with seem oblivious to your career/jobs/money situation.
Abbey, although you don't seem too keen on the new job, your reason doesn't seem very valid - I think you said the layout of the store reminded you of a place where you had a bad experience? I feel that you've had an awful lot of fiddly little jobs, jobs that led absolutely nowhere - don't you want a chance to turn things round now?
