She just murdered Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Her voice is not a patch on what it used to be. Why don't singers like her, Elton, Macca, etc, realise when they're past it and pack it in?
I went to a Brian Ferry gig a few years ago and his voice sounds exactly (and I really mean exactly) like it always has. He must be the exception though.
agree with that, 237SJ, but he wasn't exactly a power singer, though he did plenty of up-tempo numbers; I think it's easier to croon into old age than to perform showstoppers. But JTH is right, anyway: Argentina has belonged to Julie Covington since 1977. (Is she still singing?)
I went to see Evita in London in the 70s with someone who bought tickets for me as a surprise. I can't recall who sang the leading roll at the time, it wasn't Covington, May be it was Elaine Paige, my memory fails me.
I remember it as a bit of a marketing coup. This knockout single and album were released and generated a lot of puzzlement and interest. By the time the stage show was out there, the advertising was done!
