Mercifully, Jodie Whittaker is stepping down as Doctor Who. Phew! To succeed her would you prefer a man, a woman, or a transgender or other form of gender?

A woman ought not have got the role because the role was a male character and always was. It was PC nonsense that changed the sex of "the master" first, allowing the same to occur to "the doctor" at a later point. It's utter gibberish; once a character in a story has been defined it's wrong to go messing about with it for antisocial reasons. I'm sure Jodie did the...

the problem with Helen Mirren and Stephen Fry....especially Stephen Fry is that they are always themselves....like Brian Blessed. I'd like to see Michael Sheen have a go. Alex Kingston would be an interesting choice and would fit into the canon.
and yes JtH, deffo a whiff of "we don't want GURLZ in our gang"
Jodie Whittaker fought a terrible script, dire choice of 'travelling companions, and lack of an 'identity' as a doctor, and sadly lost -I think any actor would. The Black woman who played
'The other doctor' in last years series would make a really good doctor, I think. I disagree with an older character being a better choice. What will finally stop me watching it is that awful John Bishop who is going to be introduced in this next series and a 'Companion'. I can't understand half he says and he comes across to me as a self-centred bore.

given her previous with the series, it would either require gymnastics by the scriptwriters to explain how River Song became a time lord, or would a complete suspension of credibility on the part of the audience.

I agree with both of your suggestions.
"...a complete suspension of credibility on the part of the audience."

Travelling time and space in a mid-20th century telephone box, fighting off attack from advanced races with nothing but a screwdriver for protection, accompanied by a gameshow host and a couple of tokens is fine but let's not use the same actor in a different role.

Made me chuckle anyway. :-P
What about scrapping the whole thing and apologising for the 70 /80 years of awful television .
APG - you'd need to get 'the other doctor' out of Holby first :)
I dont mind what gender but the writing needs to be better...
To be fair Jodie is a great actor but the writers let her down
We need a show runner that understands how to write Dr Who
bring back Stephen Moffat!
quite so, Chris. I haven't watched it since Hartnell left the series, despite being an admirer of Delia Derbyshire.
Nah, Moffat had his fair share of crappy scripts too. I'd like to see Neil Gaiman, but I'm sure he'd never commit to the show. Maybe Toby Whithouse is available?
//Does anybody else want to kill people who say "end of"?//

Me too, to coin a phrase. If ot's said to me I always as Of what? It really confuses people!
I think Robert Sheehan would be good.
Pauline quirke would’ve my choice
good one puzzled. She is an underrated actress.

but she is the Doctor's wife and a time traveller in her own right....I bet Steven Moffat could come up with a storyline "spoilers sweetie"
Wolfgang, especially considering that Peter Capaldi appeared in both Doctor Who and Torchwood before taking the main role. Colin Baker also appeared in the show before taking over. I guess the difference is the Alex Kingston had a main, recurring role, rather than a one off appearance.
yup and Peter Capaldi did a whole "why am I wearing this face" thing... you don't duck or ignore it, you make a thing of it
