having read ynnafymmi's post below about great expectations, in which she asserts it's the best film ever made on 4 separate occasions, i was wondering what YOU thought the best film ever made was - it may or may not be your favourite film, but what is it for you?

I agree with Mozz in that my favourite films that I can watch repeatedly are not what I think are the best films ever made based on the 'art' itself - cast, acting, storyline, score, photography etc.
My list of the best would be a toss up between The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, Once Upon a time in the West and Once upon a time in America (the last two probably propelled to super status with fuel from Morricone's score).
Bridge On The River Kwai
Schlinders List for me, closely followed by Dr Zhivago.
I’m not a big film watcher. Most of them are too long. But I love An Officer and A Gentleman. The end scene where Richard Gere comes into the factory in his dress whites where Debra Winger’s character works is guaranteed to have me blubbing
Volver (2006)
The Godfather
The Shawshank redemption
Counter question - which film is most repeated on TV that shouldn't be?

Nominees - Sink the Bismark / Silverado !!!!
agree with you on the Tarantinos. davebro. Loved Once Upon a Time, thought Inglourious Basterds was boring. Pulp Fiction wonderful, Reservoir Dogs not.

Either 2000 or Les Enfants du Paradis, I think.
Hello- it's me at the back of the room

Can I put forward
' 12 Angry Men' ?
yes - Henry Fonda's tour de force. Probably his best film.
Shawshank Redemption.
Charles Laughton,Mutiny on the Bounty gets my vote, closely followed
by One flew over the cuckoo's nest.
Now you've done it !!!!!!!!!!
mentioning Charles Laughton

The best film EVER must be - "HOBSON'S CHOICE" !!!

END OF.
^^ ^^
In fairness he did not make any bad films, what an actor,
Bosun keelhaul that man,just brilliant.
Love the final shot in '12 Angry Men'

The camera starts off showing Henry Fonda in close up in front of the court house entrance .

Then it slowly pans out to show the whole building - then the street - then the immediate buildings - then the buildings further away - then finally the whole city .

The reason being to remind the viewer that while he and the other jurors have been
'stuck ' in the jury room considering the fate of the accused ; the business of the city has been carrying on and people have been going about their business unaware of what had just transpired
Dances with Wolves
African Queen
Favourite... Field of dreams
Best... Something draws me to Genevive, something so charmingly English or maybe Child 44,
Twelve Angry Men was originally a TV play, broadcast live as early TV often was. You can see it here (NB no Henry Fonda)

And its The Shawshank Redemption from me!
Clearly, there is no such thing as 'the best film' - because most of us lack sufficient knowledge to make an informed choice, so naturally, we select the films we like best, which is not the same thing.

I have always understood that the critics' favourite is Citizen Cain, which I've never seen, so can;t comment.

A huge favourite on these type of threads is always It's A Wonderful Life, which I found mawkish, badly scipted, edited and acted, and a complete waste of time.

But of course, it's a matter of taste and choice, rather than what is actually 'best'.

I fondly remember the 'Best' polls the music papers used to do in the 1970s' and the 'best' in each catagory was always the most popular, which again is not the same thing.

Take bass players - there is no way that Geezer Butler is a better bassist than Jack Bruce, and he would be the first to say it, but once Cream split, Jack slowly vanished off the lists, mever to return, and Jaco Pastorious who was a better bassist than both of them, and again they would both acknowledge that, would never feature because he was a jazz musician.

It's interesting to read people's choices, but they cannot all be right, and, by definition, there can only ever be one 'best' fim, and no-one would ever agree on what that is.

One thing I do know - it's not South Pacific!!!!!!!
