Remember me?? Had numerous problems with my little Fiesta 1994 auto Ghia, but since the new alternator the cutting out has stopped. The car is still going even though the gearbox is on its way out. Having said that I don't drive it very far at all!! Have been considering getting a new car but the savings aren't going to well. Wondering if it is worth getting the gearbox repaired & keeping the car, only has 62,000 miles on it, bodywork is in good nick, & now the cutting out problem is rectified it is ok apart from the gearbox. Have spoken to a mechanic & he said he could get me a secondhand gearbox for 150, I realise a new one will cost more than the car is worth! So what I am really asking for is any advice, do I continue to try to save my pennies & get a newer car or do I part with 150 & hope that the secondhand one is ok?
We had our auto gear box replaced on our 1999 Fiesta Ghia ( recon ) that cost 1000 , 18 months ago, so 150 is good, mind the auto box fitted to the Fiesta is prone to faults. We had less than 30000 on the clock.
These gearboxes have always been troublesome, I would not risk a second hand one. save the 150, put it towards your newer car.
You could retrofit your auto to manual but it's much more complicated than you think and certainly not something you should be thinking about on a car of this age.
