Hello everyone,

The news section is always fraught with fierce debate and personal opinion. I try my best to let threads run their course so that people can debate like reasonable adults.

The anonymous nature of the internet tends to bring out the worst in people, but I believe that the majority of AnswerBank users are above that.

Please don't abuse my trust in letting a thread run its course by turning it into a slanging match, otherwise we'll have to be much harsher in our judgements when it comes to post removals and suspensions.

Thanks,

Ed.

I'm surprised R1Geezer gets away what he does: gratuitous insults to anyone who doesn't agree 100% with his views.
You're not usually so reticent when it comes to 'calling spades bloody shovels', AOG.

You were NOT taken to take for calling me 'Madam' you were taken to task for implying that I was *neither* a sir nor a madam but inhabiting some sort of 'other' hinterland by very merit of my sexuality....

Please have the guts to be honest in your whinging...
this thread seems to be having precisely the opposite effect to the one intended. Funny how things turn out, isn't it?
I earlier said I wasn't going to join in childish games with my taunters, but in your case I will make an exception, because you have once again accused me of saying something that you and others implied I did say.

/// you were taken to task for implying that I was *neither* a sir nor a madam but inhabiting some sort of 'other' hinterland by very merit of my sexuality.... ///

You suggest (no actually said) that I implied that "you inhabited some sort of hinterland, because the very merit of your sexuality" ????????

Now where pray have I ever said this?

I did in fact say "Madam (or what the appropriate term is)"

This I explained, (but I will try again), was, taking into my advanced years, and the present political correct climate we now live under, was to try and explain, that I did not know what was the correct PC term to use?

Just as one can insult some females by calling them Mrs or Miss, when one doesn't know their status, one is told one must call them Ms.

Had I had just called you 'Madam', you most likely would have soon attacked me for using the wrong term, hence the words in brackets to prevent you from doing so. It was also in no way intended to be some sort of slight (that you yourself invented), on your homosexuality.

I do not wish this to be an apology to you, because I never apologise to anyone for something I have never said or done, especially to a person such as yourself, who only insults but never apologises.
AOG to help in the future if you know a persons name or in this case user name the correct thing is to use that. without recourse to titles.. or any previously used variations...e.g as female but of questionable sexuality myself it would be appropriate to get round it by calling me rowanwitch, rowan, or as one or two have started Row, jackthe hat therefore could be addressed as such, or often JTH is used on the site.... in the same way as your user name is abbreviated for ease of use.
rowanwitch

/// in the same way as your user name is abbreviated for ease of use. ///

Or even altered etc to insult or abuse, as is often the case with username.

I go on to explain my reason for not calling her by her username.

I can't remember now in this instance, but I believe I originally addressed her by her user name, and then being annoyed at her, I then said "MADAM" which is usual when one doesn't want to appear too friendly or too familiar, just as I have been called "SIR you are a....." many times on here before.

Here I go again after reading some of the expletives etc used by some on here, I can't believe I am still having to explain my use of the word 'MADAM'.
As the person who is 'always attacking' you - oh come on! We exchange our views, we disagree, but i have never 'attacked' you in my life!

I take issue you with on the phrases you use, and the veiled insults to other users, but 'attack'? That is coming on a bit strong i have to say.

You are erudite and intelligent enough - with enough experience of misunderstandings here - to know that your use of the word 'madam' with the 'whatever' codicil which you added on, but curiously ommitted when defending yourself (again!) could be misconstrued as offensive - which by me, it was.

Look AOG - we all write what we think - we all are read by those who choose to read what we say. If you find your self 'attacked and insulted' - take a step back and ask why?

You are not the reasonable all-things-to-all-men figure you like to portray yourself as - and you know it as well as the rest of us.

If you don;t like being attacked, then tone down your phraseology and rhetoric, as well as your frequent attacks on others, and you'll be amazed how people will stop challenging you.

I post far more on far more sections than you, and i can count on one hand the number of times i have been taken to task - apart from by you of course - wheras you object to it being a dailyoccurence.

What could be the difference between us i wonder?

Think about it.
I am Ronald and my wife is Vivien.....although we prefer to be called Viv and Ron; without any need for titles. You'll always know which one of us is posting because we make the point in signing at the bottom of our postings. However I am sometimes replied to as Vi, Viv, Vivand, Ron, Rob, Rod etc but I'm not bothered.

My mother-in law had it right when she once said to me.."I don't care what people call me. What I dislike is being called too early in the morning."

Ron.
Good Luck to you ed
come on Ed certain people on here are treated diffrently than the rest you know it!

your not wrong there bernie, just go on Facebook the ed is not as fair as he makes out to be, according to some
Oh look, another user that's only been here about a week and has formed strong opinions on how the site is run already. we do seem to get a lot of them round here.
Careful, chuckie........your 'petticoat of cynicism' is showing.........;o)
i went on facebook and couldn't fathom out what i was to do when i got there.

that was a waste of 7 seconds.
triggerhappy - take exception to your comment about chatterbankers being common - there are some really nice, non judgemental and very genuine folk on there - and define 'common' please - at the same time define pretentious person
common : the body of people not of noble birth or not ennobled

personally i feel that the downside of being better than everyone else is that people tend to assume you're pretentious.
Looks as if we are mostly commoners on AB.
