Seems like the days of 'Vicar & Tarts' parties are now over then?
What other costumes should be banned?

/// You could answer that yourself AOG, if a black person 'whited up' (!?) in order to mockingly portray, say, a football hooligan, would you find that offensive? Or would you find it understandable if a white person were to find that offensive? ///
Why did you specifically suggest a 'Football Hooligan' when we where talking 'Gangsters'?
Since black persons also go to football matches, it would be unusual if there were not black 'Football Hooligans' also.
Anyway that is irrelevant, you should know me by now, I am all for a level playing field, I wouldn't be offended if a black person were to 'White Up' and imitate a 'Football Hooligan' 'Gangster' or whatever.
All I ask for is, that it is just not just 'one sided', that being to be offended of course,

AOG, that was exactly my point, there are black football hooligans but the stereotype is of the pot-bellied, shaven headed, heavily tattoo'd white man (which is why I chose football hooligan).
Fair play if you wouldn't be offended and saw the joke in it, as would I, however would you not find it understandable if some people were offended by that as it's essentially saying football hooliganism is a white thing, so anyone with different coloured skin will have to make themselves white to effectively portray the role.
Tinks, some people definitely are OTT, they look for problems where there needn't be one, which I think does a disservice to those who are genuinely offended when people do cross the line. Of these students, I think there's only one who could possibly have a point and even that's based on the context. Surprised you didn't say when people dress up as Mr T, that's a popular one and always looks good!

British troops have been bombing Libya. The British are involved. Even if they were not involved, it is a import story because we buy oill from there.
The story of some over sensative American students has nothing to do with Britain. It just seems like any old excuse to have a go at minorities even though they are another country's minorities.

"It is in America.
Why report this in a British newspaper and website (and AnswerBank)?
Why should we be bothered what a handful of students 4,000 miles are upset about? "
because the little hitlers that run our councils will more than likely follow suit.
these pathetic students go on about respect, well they should respect the culture of their country and its ways, if they dont like it go somewhere else, i'm sure they wont be missed

I think the general rule to be applied here is to guage the circumstances and the taste levels required as a result of the circumstances.
Some costumes are simply unacceptable - the Arab 'terrorist' being an example. Likewise the 'sexy schoolgirl' is old-hat and was not appropriate when it was new, so that probably ought to be laid to rest.
As for 'tarts and vicars' - I doubt if anyone has held a 'T & V' party for the last forty years, unless anyone can contradict me on that?

Andy... you probably don't want to hear this.. but when I worked in a ski resort in Italy we had a tarts and vicars night, but the wrong way round.. girls as vicars, lads as tarts. As fancy dress resources are limited up in the Alps the costumes were kind of thrown together so I was wearing a denim skirt, knee high boots, a leopard print top and a feather boa, tons of make-up but sadly no wig so just my baldy head! I looked like a bargain basement prostitute!
