There's something else that should be considered - supermarkets are probablu the worse places to go to, if you want quality veg at reasonable prices.
I know that there are not many left, but street markets (like the excellent East Street market in Walworth, south London) is the place to go to, to get your fruit 'n' veg.
The problem is - people are now used to jumping in their car, and doing all their shopping in one fell swoop.
We're paying over the odds for potatoes which have been washed clean of mud, for clementines that come in nice plastic netting bags, and by carrots which are all exactly the same time.
I prefer to buy my fruit from one of the many Turkish supermarkets in Islington who tend to stock fruit which have been genetically modified (pomegranets the size of watermelons...)
You're missing out on hours of fun. It's great fun clambering up onto one's high horse when one notices trashy foodstuffs in other people's trolleys (Walls Vienetta, peanut M&ms or Sunny Delight for example).
I think we should steer clear of comparing food with cigarettes.
People smoke because they are both physically and psychologically addicted to nicotine.
I bet if you surveyed 100,000 smokers and asked them "If you could take a pill that would stop your craving for cigarettes over night" the vast majority would say 'Yes'.
It appears, allegedly, that if you do not submit to the word of the OP, to the letter, you prove to be rather silly, and no doubt put your membership of his fan-club at risk. I have a vision of the OP, sat in his kitchen, in his underpants and maybe a vest to top it off, with a pot of vitriol steaming away by his side as he bangs away at his keyboard in an effort to browbeat anyone and everyone into becoming a believer.
I agree with the cooking thing ...a fair number of the younger people I know have only basic cooking skills although they watch cookery programmes.. and I have noticed a lot more trollies lately loaded with cheap fillers. Its ok if you have a cheaper store like Aldi or a market nearby to get salad veg and fruit etc but TBH while on a decent income I think twice about buying anything but the basics ranges from Sainsburys as I think they are very expensive for fresh produce.
