no idea about the last comment you made but Ive noticed since I got made redundant just how expensive fruit and veg is, maybe poorer families cant afford it rather than never been particularly interested in it. I've more or less stopped buying ours from the supermarkets and buy it from the market instead. Loads of bargains there.
as pdust really. f&v from the supermarket is crap as well, you either have to let it ripe in the bowl then catch the 10 minutes that it is ready to eat, or you miss it and all you can do is throw its rotting flesh into the bin.
well going on the people i see in our local supermarket they are not cutting back on anything, if they bought fresh food though instead of the packaged junk i see in the trolleys then perhaps they could cut back on costs that way. Go to markets and buy there, it's cheaper and you can pick and choose what you want.
Actually, I find you comment rather arrogant and presumptuous - there are a lot of families, unemployed and on the cusp of poverty, who struggle to feed their families with a nutritious and well balanced diet....and, dare I say it, are probably far greater in numbers than those who live on cheap fatty or sugary foods.
this five a day is a relatively new thing, and it's a promotion by the medical profession to get people off some of the junk food they consume and into a healthy lifestyle. By the way the unhealthiest people i have seen of late were doctors, nurses in a hospital i visited recently, and not for the first time i wondered why they don't take their own advice.
if you don't have a market anywhere near then that can't be helped. I have to go some distance to one, as there is no longer any decent markets, shops in our area, and i have to use public transport which can be a bind, but once done then i am happy.
sqad, we were poor and did eat some junk type food, like fish fingers, though these days they say omega 3 on the packet? but we always had fresh food, especially on a weekend with the customary roast dinner. So perhaps what has changed is that many people rich or poor don't cook, or never learned how to, so resort to packet foods or burgers.
Thank you sqad, my sentiments entirely, but had I had posted that we would most likely have now been on answer '50' plus.
But what the hell, here goes,
/// Women are likely to be the worst hit by the fall, as research shows mothers tend to deny themselves meals to give more to their children. ///
Some of the ones I have seen in the supermarkets, don't appear to be under-fed, in fact some cannot wait to get through the tills before they are munching on their purchases.
And strangely enough these are not apples and pears, but crisps and biscuits.
sqad, no idea, long time since i was at school, and even then our cookery classes were rudimentary, i didn't learn much from my mothers cooking either, just that we had decent food on the table, some a bit stodgy, but mostly fresh. I just picked up bits and pieces along the way, and now can do a fair imitation of delia, without the laughs....
Gromit, due to the local supermarket being out of the budget, have to use whatever place offers value for money, but as sure as eggs are eggs, you will see people's baskets, trolleys with as much packaged and junk food as it's possible to stuff in, and we are not talking about people who look like they are on their uppers. Personally i don't care what they eat, it's their choice. But it does impact on the health service, with people becoming more obese and then have to be reliant on the NHS to sort it all out.
Of course, which is why a decline in people eating fruit and vegetables is a concern. But I attribute the decline not to people deciding eating 5 a day is rubbish as Sqad and AOG suggest, but because prices have risen sharply.
And obesity is largely down to people eating the wrong foods, crisps and biscuits, and not enough exercise.
I'm never quite sure how much veg constitutes a portion. But whatever it is I'm sure I rarely if ever get 5 portions a day these days.
If one goes out to eat, possibly pub Sunday roasts excepted, one sees so little veg with the main course that it surely can not be more than one portion. And frozen meals can leave out the permissible veg altogether; the 'roast dinner' type being best, but looks to me to be one portion at most no matter how many different veg is included.
Time was when I used to be able to get one portion from fruit juice, but since trying to lose weight that have been replaced with low calorie squash for the duration. I reckon if I get more than 3 a day it's been an exceptional day.
Maybe one needs to become vegetarian, or to top up with cabbage & broccoli smoothies during the day, to achieve 5 lots.
I can appreciate people cutting down on fruit if money is tight. On top of the money I spend buying ingredients for meals I spend an extra £10 a week on average on fresh fruit, and that's just for one person............
