There is no snow where I live but yet when I went to do my weekly shop there were idiots filling their trollies with basic essentials. Nothing left for me, I was just doing my normal Thursday night shop I hasten to add. I despair at how thick, stupid and selfish the general public are.

From the Daily Mail:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/books/article-2235196/A-1950s-Housewife-Sheila-Hardy-womans-guide-lost-world.html

"Shops closed for an hour at lunchtime, every Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday. The dullness of British weekends, when only churches and parks were open, was notorious"

The half day closing in the week was in lieu of having to work Saturday morning.

well if you're not bothered about the snow, just go somewhere else then - or go tomorrow - problem solved!

as someone else said, people are just planning ahead, because they dont want to get stuck without enough food - these people you are insulting - well they may have lived quite far away?
or only get one day a week to shop?
or have too many kids to bring out in this weather?
they may have been stocking up for other people too - elderly parents, neighbours etc?
not everyone has a car or good health etc and this weather can affect some people badly.
perhaps you consider what other peoples lives might entail before branding them all selfish ... the fact that you clearly are only considering yourself in this situation makes you a contender for selfish, thats for sure ..
Blimey joko, that's a bit harsh... of course people are worried about not being able to get out, and some are buying for other people - but the newspapers and TV news are all leading on stories of supermarket shelves being cleared, as if we are in for a seige. People are too used to having immediate access to staple foods - if you have a small store in, you should be fine, but not everyone does, many buy from day to day.
harsh? i'm not the one calling strangers abusive names becasue a shop ran out of bread!

im just saying instead of instantly judging other people and deciding you know the reasons for what they are buying, spare a thought for what else might be happening.
they could have buying for a party, an event, a community centre, who knows...?
i do not believe that loads of people bought trolley loads of milk and bread etc ... people may have bought an extra loaf and an extra pint or two or something - hardly selfish panic buying.

I went out today mainly for my elderly next door neighbour. She has family who turn up now and again. At least she has the basics to last her a few days.
I don't panic buy bread - when its Winter we prepare ourselves for bad weather anyway. I always keep some partly baked bread rolls/ loaf in, they last for months and taste just like the real thing. I can always rustle something up from the food we have in the store cupboard or the freezer.
We have been snowed in since about 11 this morning. but we are used to it when we get bad weather and are well prepared with a well stocked 'spare' food cupboard in the garage, along with a full chest freezer and plenty of flour for bread making. OH was off today, so weather didn't affect him, I went to work and got sent home cos of the snow, just as well, as we can only get in and out on foot at the mo, annd thats perilous.
I got extra bread in for my elderly neighbour and a few other bits .
The last thing I want is to fall over on the ice and break a bone .And we have no car so have to go on foot .
I must admit joko is right- I did shopping for 6 elderly people today as well as myself- if things are on the shelves you are entitled to buy them you know.
