There is no snow where I live but yet when I went to do my weekly shop there were idiots filling their trollies with basic essentials. Nothing left for me, I was just doing my normal Thursday night shop I hasten to add. I despair at how thick, stupid and selfish the general public are.

How did we manage in the 'Good Old Days' AOG ;o)
that sounds like good energy-saving, aog. Buy it all while the weather's mild and you don't have to run around in the snow buying it later. We do a lot of bulk-buying in Costco; saves time, money and petrol.
surely people can just buy what they need today instead? the shelves will have been restocked.

The one where you accused me of being anti-Brit(ish) ;o)

Sounds like a prompt for my usual comment:

"It wasn't like it in my day" :0)

But to be serious, it just didn't happen in 'days of yore'.

We had rationing.
And I remember rationing (just about)!! We had no fridges or freezers and the shops opened 5 days a week and closed for lunch. And we ate well. My god, AOG, we are real old fogeys!!
Boo, my friends doesn't have a breadmaker but makes the most delicious bread the old fashioned way, by hand.
People didn't commute in the olden days!
Yes we did, ummmm. Horse and cart!! ;o)
Lol....
We did our usual Thursday trip to the supermarket yesterday and bough what we usually buy to see us through till early next week. However, due to the bad weather forecast I think many people who usually shop today or Saturday decided, quite sensibly in my mind, to go yesterday instead. Therefore the same volume of shopping was done, it was just done yesterday instead of being spread over three days.
I don't believe much/any of it was panic buying, just normal people doing a normal shop a day or two early. I'm glad we did ours yesterday, I don't think we'd actually make it to the supermarket today.
it;s a good thing i went out very early, as the snow has been falling here in the capital for the past hour, and it's settling.
exactly ethandron!
I'm in my late 80's & I well remember 'in the old days' my dad talking about 'the good old days', & I am sure that when my dad were a lad folk talked about 'the old days' being better,& so it goes on.

WR.
i don't think most are thick at all, just careful, if you are getting on in years, then you could well be stuck in door for ages. Better to have the things you need, rather that risk falling on the snow, ice, and breaking a limb. Then you end up in A&E, so shop early, save the NHS, non?
people have been commuting for work, business, pleasure, since the inception of the railways, they were used initially for transportation of goods, but once the railways companies realised the benefits of carrying people, it quickly took off. Going by train was quicker and certainly cheaper than by other methods of transport.
Before Beeching came along and cut many of the branch lines there was a massive rail network into most parts of the country, places that do not have a local station now.
I am sure that a little bit of snow wouldn't have deterred them then, but health and safety rules and regulations, seem to carry more weight now than it did way back then.

Rather than clutter up this thread, referring to a previous thread, I have provided you with an answer in the original thread.

/// and the shops opened 5 days a week and closed for lunch.///

Our shops opened 5½ days a week.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday morning, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
