It was a comment made to offend; Garcia needs to grow up.
.

I saw the fried chicken clip - and wondered what was going on and where I had been for the last dozen years.

I havent seen it explained anywhere - presumably la polla frita is obscene in Spanish. I suppose the English (or would that be Angleesh ?) correlation would be to say of Tigey - and for pud, I would serve up spotted d+ck

as for the fella saying Garcia has lots and lots of coloured frenz - hmmm needs reeducation doesnt he ?
Garcia wants the TaylorMade contract, he knows how his bread is buttered......
The whole business is ridiculous.

The significance of the “fried chicken” nonsense is completely lost on me. Apparently it has something to do with America’s deep south. In addition to that we now have European Tour chief executive George O'Grady having to apologise for using the racially insensitive word "coloured". Apparently he described many of Garcia's friends as being "coloured athletes."

When I was at school we were taught not to refer to black people as black because it was offensive. We were to call them “coloured”. Somewhere along the line this changed (I know not when) and now the term coloured is not only deemed inappropriate but is, apparently, offensive.

There are too many things from which too many people take offence. Worse than that, those things are continually changing, being added to and are even assuming the contrary meaning to that they once had. We should not be expected to have to keep up. Whatever connotations it may be suggested it has, it’s not the end of the world if someone offers to cook fried chicken when they invite you to their house. Certaninly no more than it is if a Frenchman invites me around for some “Rosbif”.
Peter - its an insult in the USA especially in the southern states, where a white person insults a black by calling him a Fried chicken eater.
But on this occasion it was said aggressively and with intent New Judge. Nothing ridiculous about it and nothing to do with people being misunderstood.
Two little boys falling out in the playground. What a fuss!
derr Maydup I shudda contacted you before I posted.

Still, here is what the Spanith papers are saying
and it is pollo frito and not polla frita oh bloddy hell

Yes how tragic.

Whether or not it was said with "aggressively and with intent", in the overall scheme of things it is less important than a spat in the school playground. As such it should not make the headlines. Indeed it should not even make half a column inch on page seventeen.

On a wider note people should shorten the lists of words and phrases that upset them.
My background is Welsh. Should I be offended if offered Leek and Potato Soup?

@Maydup

if you can be bothered check the history of these two ( read it but cant recall where otherwise i'd post the link)and you will see why Garcia said it, he was actually repeating/paraphrasing Woods from an earlier time/incident, where woods mentioned fried chikkin.

As usual the handwringers see racism everywhere, theyre obsessed by it, all they do is look for it analyse everything spoken or written just in case, you never know they may find a hint of racism.

Lets hope nobody ever makes derogatory statements about the brits and their fish and chips..perish the though.

If I hear the French refer to the English as Les Rosbifs i shall act all indignant and offended and complain in the stongest possible way....
Utter nonsense.
It should not make the papers i agree, but he should not have said it in the beginning. As I said, Garcia should grow up.
No, baz, it wasn't Woods who used it in the past. It was Fuzzy Zoeller, another golfer, who said he'd serve Woods "fried chicken and collard greens or whatever the hell they serve". That was intended as a racial insult. Garcia has a feud with Woods; his use of "fried chicken" was deliberately insulting.

As to coloured, I seem to recall there was a organisation for "African Americans", as they are now called, which styled itself "for the advancement of colored people". But times change; as I've noted on here before, this site censors a word , ending -gro, used by Martin Luther King in his most famous speech.
I can understand the furore around the Garcia comment and it brought back memories of the Zoeller soundbite.

I don't really get this one though:

What is PC? Should he have said black? Racially mixed parentage? Half-caste?
As Woods once referred to himself as 'Cablinasian', just how should O'Grady have referred to non-white athletes? I genuinely don't know.
///everybody wants to be offended,///

... including you it seems, since you appear offended from your post.
what's a //so called ethnic or other//?
Let's face it, whatever one says somebody is going to be offended.
Great for publicity purposes.
It looks like every time someone apologises they risk saying something else they might have to apologise for. It's safer to just keep quiet.
In the days of segregation "coloreds" and "colored" appeared, for example, on washbasins in bus and streetcar terminals, and other public places. It's that association of the single word 'colored' that makes it offensive now.
