They obviously thought there was a good chance he wouldn't kill anyone else, but not being sure, the only way to know for sure was to let him out and see what happened.

Now we know.
He must have said he was really sorry about the other murders and promised not to do it again. I bet they're kicking themselves they fell for that old chestnut.
Well, if they give him life he can alway fall back on the European Court of Human Rights to help him.
How?
I wonder how many people have died because convicted murderers have been released,or put it another way ,how many people would be alive today if we still had the death penalty in the uk.
Surprised it only took until post 27 until someone mentioned the death penalty.
I agree with you em, he should never been released.
Sorry I forgot,it's against his human rights not to be able to murder people,my bad.How many people would still be alive today if we took away criminals rights to murder people by locking them up for good ,until death,no hope of parole.is that better.
I'm sure he'll get another chance if he says he's really really really sorry.
He was released because some bright spark thought it was a good idea.
You're talking rubbish, Neil.

Moan about the death penalty all you want but the fact is the UK doesn't have the death penalty....and I doubt that will ever change.
// He was released because some bright spark thought it was a good idea. //

He's probably upset because he made a bad judgement. Still, he can console himself with the thought that it wasn't anyone he cared about that the bloke murdered. That would have been much worse.
I would still like to know how many people have died at the hands of released killers?
Not much detail but a starting point...
