David Cameron's plans for war have been rejected in a House of Commons vote tonight. The Hovernment have lost control of its own foreign policy and Dave has been dealt a humiliating defeat, which will embarrass him abroad.

Incredible - I could hardly believe it

Not a vote of confidence - so the govt doesnt fall

but basically it means that we dont erm believe what our leaders are telling us.

Well I hope that isn't the end of it, as the situation may deteriorate still further. I hope this was a vote against action "now", rather than for all of the future. I have a hard time believing that not intervening is the best course of action, or at least that intervention would have made things any worse than they already are.

The margin of defeat was pretty narrow, so it seems likely that yet more violence in Syria might tip the balance in favour of military action. In my opinion, we've already waited far too long...

Civilians are dying al over the world due to dictatorships and bad government. Do we help them all and if so, how do we prioritise?

Well, I was completely wrong when I wrote this earlier this week...

I am pleasantly surprised by this result. Parliament have asserted their authority and the will of the people not to get caught up in another Iraq has been delivered.

It will be interesting what the US do next, now that the UK will not be a partner in any military adventure in Syria.
