What Is Supposed To Be Correct, Black Or Coloured?
I didn't think calling a black person coloured was racism?
Not sure what else the women said on the phone, but it seems very petty to me.
Also, £80 a week seems a lot for one person in her mid 70s!

We actually attended a staff training day where the two people in charge (both of Afro-Caribbean descent) told us that the ONLY word to describe 'non-whites' was 'black' and that it was to be used when referring to people of, say, Chinese origin.

there's seldom much point in trying to group people by colour. "Coloured" itself is far too wide and would have to include somebody mildly olive-skinned like me. Even "black" people come in a range from pale yellow-brown to dark blue-black.
Words like that suggest the only thing you can see about them is their skin and you can't even find the right word to describe it. Try going through life without them.

It's not racist to use the word 'coloured' to describe people of Afro-Caribbean descent. It just outdated, in the same way that half-caste to describe someone as mixed race is outdated and retarded is now no longer the word we use to describe people with mental handicaps or learning difficulties.
Daisy ninja - I can't believe that there are many who use the word 'black' to describe all non-white people. Even those with the most basic of educations must recognise that there are more than two races in the world (ie. black and white).

My difficulty is that I wouldnt call Obama - black..... (Muslim perhaps - 40% of Americans dont think he is Christian apparently)
Pakistanis dont like being called Indian and use 'Asian' which I always thought was Chinese.
O I addressed a Russian in Polish once - that was fun. I didnt get shot.
