Annea...I guess we have to think the unthinkable these days. After our popular entertainers, like Harris and Saville have shown that there are no out of bound areas, perhaps we should not be too surprised when a Paediatrician is found guilty.

What all these people and others, like Priests, Scout Leaders, Army Officers , Teachers all have in common is the desire and the opportunity, the prefect storm.

I must pick on carrust's point - he's quite right about all men becoming tarred with the same brush and it's not fair - remember the paediatrician who was attacked in his home because some numbskull didn't understand words. Boys especially need male role models in out-of-school activities.

Just wait until the report on peadophiles in the cabinet during the Thatcher years comes out ( if it ever does !) There are going to be a some very well known politicians, many of them still alive , named as predatory peadophiles .

Gawd Eddie, how discomforting. The only time I've had a feeling probably like yours is when it came to light (in the Sunday Times) that the French equivalent of The Ripper used the hotel we used to stay in Les Halles in Paris, quite a nice place and reasonable with a good restaurant opposite it, L'Hotel de Cygne. I felt distinctly uncomfortable about it and still do....

Eddie51...you are correct about the old abuse investigations. There are indeed people still alive that are quaking in their beds tonight, and quite rightly so.

These old investigations used to be problematic, before we had the Internet but no longer. The 'net has changed the world for ever. It has ensured, as much as possible, that once something is out in the open, its stays out in the open.

I don't know what the answer is, but wouldn't it be better if this wasn't such a taboo subject. Getting angry and long prison terms don't seem to be stopping it happening. Aren't we lucky that we're 'normal'.

I have come to the conclusion that its quite ordinary people, most men. They have the opportunity, and they "give it a go" Its the sex drive that is to blame..... that and the ability to put to one side, the knowledge of the harm that is being done to such young lives. Add to that the opinion that the "kids actually enjoy it" and you have the prefect conditions for abuse.

Its an awful thing to say but I fully accept that this kind of abuse will continue for the foreseeable future, as it has done for many years to come.

I have been recently re-reading " The Fatal Shore" by Robert Hughes, giving the standard account of the convict settlement of Australia. People were sent in convict ships to Oz, ostentatiously to rid our overcrowded prisons of its more intractable inmates but in reality, they were sent to populate the new Crown Territory.

But many of the young men and boys complained of sexual exploitation by older men on the voyage, and when they were settled in Oz. Its just an indication that some men will go to any length to slake their sexual thirst and if compliant women are not available, than anything will do.
