Here is described as a 'Chick Flick' Why??????????

I have not read the book or had any wish to see the film, but what is all this hype surrounding 'Fifty Shades of Grey'?

As far as I can see it is nothing more than a mild form of porn, which is now showing to be such a problem amongst our young.

Lol, Hypo
Had no interest in the books or the film, but a friend of mine LOVES them !! I'd rather had a good crime thriller myself.
I don't have to read a book or see a film before deciding if it is for me. The description of both film and book helped me decide that I wouldn't find it interesting. Like everyone else I enjoy certain types of books and this type isn't on my list.
I forgot to add that I wouldn't like to see it condemed. We should have a choice to read what we want.
Well said xstitcher
I don't think anyones condemning it, most just think it's a pile of crap.
Have no desire to read it or watch the film, but if you do want to learn more about deviant sexual practices, would suggest employment in the NHS, where our patients present to A+E with all kinds of strange objects that they have inserted in themselves and done damage. This practice appears most common in patients aged 50 and above.
AOG

In answer to your questions...

FSOG is described as a 'chick flick' because it will appeal overwhelmingly to women, because the novel of the same name was very popular amongst women.

The reason for the hype is exactly the same as the reason for the hype around the first (and indeed all) 'Harry Potter' movie.

Like the HP novels, the book has been a publishing sensation, therefore the film adaptation will garner much interest.

I have not read the book and have no intention of seeing the film, but I would suggest that there is nothing wrong with a bit of eroticism.

Dozens of films are released every year where we see people murdered or beaten to a pulp...what's the harm in a bit of sex? After all, it's what got us all here (appalling though it is, to acknowledge that our parents ever actually 'did it').
If only hetro-sex, it will please muslims & pope......ban it!
Yes, AOG, I know there was a lot of hype when the book came out but I don't understand why so many people are giving the film, which has pretty poor reviews, so much publicity. It came ,it went, life goes on and I'm sure many young people are more discerning about what films they watch.
I'd rather watch FSoG than Downton Abbey.

I'd rather watch anything than Downton Abbey.

Even football.

Or that fella,....... whatshisname?
Quite agree Shoota, although I do find whatshisname a bit racey
AO)G - "Funny I expected a more protesting response from our female ABers such as those shown in these three newspaper links."

Can't imagine why - most of our regular female AB'ers know the differences (and they are fundamental) between S & M in a consenting relationship, and domestic abuse.

To compare the two is like suggesting that watching James Bond films encourages murdering suspicious looking foreigners.

The protesting ladies are well off the mark - as far as I am aware, the book and film are not connected with domestic violence in any meaningful way whatever.

I am minded of walking through picket lines of hand-wringing Christians in order to watch The Exorcist when it was released - none of them had actually watched it, but as an atheist, I found it didn't damage my faith one little bit.
It's about as exciting and shocking as Shrek! Have a look at some of the Japanese stuff online, you'll be moaning and groaning in ecstasy all through the night.

I'm just preparing things before we go out.
It came ,it went

It hasn't even been released yet
Remember when I was about 14 we passed around Lady Chatterley's Lover in a brown paper cover - seems very, very tame now and no doubt 50 shades will go the same way. Stronger stuff on uTube.
oh yes, I read that for the flower arranging tips, maggiebee
The book jno,the book
the book hasn't went either, it's still in the top ten
