Like something from 1950s USA. In todays inclusive society it was a very strange trick to pull - the bouncers must've know there would be repercussions as this type of behaviour is very newsworthy.

But nightclubs have had the power to refuse entry to groups of males with absolutely no comeback. Had this happen to me several times when out even in a small group of 4 or 5. Is this wildly different from the scenario in the link?

very strange. I can understand clubs deciding that you have to be hip, or well-dressed, or sober, to get in - but white? How would disco ever have been invented if that had happened?
We have not heard the doorman's side of the story, could it be that the students are playing the race card?
The doorman said he had nothing against the individuals in question, oldgit, so no.

Here's a link to the video shot as it happened:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/group-of-students-refused-entry-to-leicester-nightclub-because-they-are-black-10270145.html

So yes, this group were not allowed into the club because were black. However, this (according to the club operators) is not company policy. I suspect the doorman was making up policy on the hoof.

I think we need to be aware that sometimes people are racist and that others aren't simply playing 'the race card' when they highlight racism.

The doorman appears to say "if it was my club I would have no problem with it".
If you've watched the video, AOG, you must agree that 'someone' is being racist (whether the doorman or the club-owners) and that the students certainly are not playing the race-card?

I know that it may be difficult for you to admit that.....
// We have not heard the doorman's side of the story, could it be that the students are playing the race card? //

admirable that people are not prepared to hear the Daily Mails take ( or some other organ ) and believe it unconditionally

intersting to see what else occurs

Still doesn't prove anything, perhaps there had been trouble in the past with either the same group or blacks on the whole.

If they had been white students it would not have reached the papers.
Peter Pedant

I'm basing my opinion on the video of the event.

Have you watched it yet?
I have watched the video clip and its quite plain to me. This chap has all the appearances of being racist, and the Club have suspended him, and quite rightly so.

Snafu03....we have plenty of racists in Britain today, and this story doesn't surprise me one little bit !
AOG

If the club had problems with this particular group, the doorman would have said, "You're barred".

If the club had previous issues with black party-goers, then it's still wrong - this group of young men should not shoulder the blame from a completely different set of clubbers.

Oh, and by the way - when you say this wouldn't have made the papers had the group been white, is the very definition of playing the race card.
yeah because they wouldnt have been chucked out for being white
by the way have you never seen a sign: "no travellers or dogs" ?

luckily for the teachers of this country - the doorman appears to say:
" if it were my club it wouldnt be a problem " -
I was upset by the incorrect use of 'was'

Ghost night club already wearing sack cloth and ashes
It is by the way clearly unlawful

AOG

Out of interest, do you accept that this doorman could be a racist?

I know you spent an awfully long amount of time positing alternative explanations when that black Parisienne, was prevented from boarding that train earlier this year - do you feel the same about this case?
AOG - Why are you so reluctant to believe/admit that racism still exists in this country?

It is quite clear from the video evidence that had this group of lads been white, they would have had no problem getting into the club, unless it was full, etc., as it would not be the doorman/clubs policy to bar 'whites' from the premises.
ANOTHEOLDGIT, the doorman has not said he was not letting them in because they had previously caused problems, it was their colour. Even if there had been previous problems with folk who happened to be black, a blanket ban on every black person is racist because if assumes that every black person will be a problem.
// Snafu03....we have plenty of racists in Britain today, and this story doesn't surprise me one little bit !//

Frankly I am astounded that the doorman didnt realise or mind that he was being recorded - presumably he was happy as he thought he was carrying out company policy

and if he was - you can't blame them for coming back armed with cameras

[ oft times I have said -er not at the door of a nightclub - " Is this being recorded ? " " Good I will look forward to the play-back " ]
Corby has it right again this morning !

For some people, Corby, everything that applies to one person, must therefore apply to all similar people. Look at the way certain people on here lump all Muslims together. It helps to perpetuate their own prejudices.
AOG tying himself up in knots so intricate that a Boy Scout would be happy to use them to hold his tent up.
Come on, aog. Answer the inquisition. Why didn't you let them in?
