Nailit -please do not presume I only base my views about prison on media reports. One of my OH's best friends became a prison officer after he left the armed forces - he works in Durham prison . A second cousin of mine is working in Bronzefield as a prison officer.
Retro, I can understand your attitude towards prisoners with whats happened to your son, I would be the same if that had happened to MY son.
BUT, not everyone in prison is a violent thug and there ARE people in prison who shouldnt be there like the lad who phoned the fire brigade that I mentioned earlier. You can choose to disbelieve me if you want but even the screws had some sympathy with him...and thats really saying something about Liverpool prison screws.

I agree, and believe you , if thats what you saw. I am sure there are people who 'fall through the cracks' but surely they are the minority, and could be dealt with in a different manner -given help in prison -or am I just living in cloud cuckoo land -probably.

"Failure to address a legitimate claim against wrong treatment by a prisoner makes the justice system the offender and I am sure you would agree that this would not be right. "

thats all fine and dandy..but why do they need financial compo..why isnt an apology sufficient ?

//Mental disorders account for 44% of social welfare benefits and disability pensions in Denmark, 43% in Finland and the United Kingdom (Scotland), and 37% in Romania and 25% in the Republic of Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest countries.//

That is from a fact sheet and publication by the WHO that estimates 25% of the world (one in four) population suffers with mental illness. I am just off to talk to a bus.

Togo, //I am just off to talk to a bus. //

... and you'll probably get more sense out of it than you will from some of these posts.
Retro, I dont know what help is available in prison nowadays but when I was last in the nick (14 yrs ago) 'help' consisted of an AA meeting once a week for alcoholics, a methadone script for heroin addicts and, err thats it. No help whatsoever for mental health issues.
you may find this interesting naomi -I doubt it....but you are going to have to reply anyway lol!

Because most prisoners are going to resume civilian life on release, and money will assist in that rehabilitation. Even those who are in prison for life usually have dependents, and the money will go to them.

So crime does pay then AH ?

that is beyond comedy...
So we have to support the relatives of lifers now. What tosh. What is crime and imprisonment an endowment policy ?
retrochic @1023
Love your link you provided. I can recognise all of that consistenly used by one person on AB.
These claims will fall under the heading of 'Tort' the remedy for which is almost always ££££'s.

There really ought to be some mechanism to weed out the frivolous claims (and there probably is but it will be under-reported) and a sensible cap on the amounts payable.
Retrochic, //you may find this interesting naomi -I doubt it....but you are going to have to reply anyway lol!//

It’s of no interest to me whatsoever. Those among us who are less inclined to be influenced by the schoolyard tittle tattle that goes on behind the AB scenes see it for what it is - nonsense. Try again.

because that has not been the law since god knows when 1189
where compensation is a standard remedy for a civil wrong

compensation is even paid for the salem witch trials 1692 according to some sources

andyes for those who can subtract - 1189 is arond 800 y before that source of all evil ooman rights.....
Naomia and cheecky girl lets us stop pulling each others plaits and get back to the obviously thorny problem of whether the queens writ runs in prisons .
An obvious one - yes it does but oddly the writ of the feds does NOT run in guantanamo - and Guantanamo isnt OBVIOUSLY better run than strangeways

strange that

and in G there have been substantiated instances of torture
less strange that if there is no rule of law

DB, Jeffrey Archer came to the same conclusion as documented in his Prison Diarys.

Not if the price you pay is the loss of your liberty - then no it doesn't.

I accept that, on the basis of previous experience, the two sides in this debate are unlikely to see each others' points of view.
