I have just remembered this. It was written by Charles Sykes and used by Bill Gates in a speech to graduates in the USA a number of years ago. RULE 1 Life is not fair - get used to it. RULE 2 The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. RULE 3 You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a...

^Has anyone suggested they have?
Ha ha love your post at 11:29 aog.
ummmm

/// Now back to reality, AOG.... ///

Always ready to inject a little reality into the proceedings ummmm, just call on me any time.
Thank you jambutty.
Naomi - I would have thought you'd encourage young people to educate themselves, form opinions and express them.
No probs.
Ummmm, I do - vigorously. I don't understand why I've surprised you.

"Except the EU have never stopped anyone from buying their home during our 43 year membership."

No one ever suggested it did. Is this about reading more into something than is there ?

It is an example of how the different nations have different cultures and so there ought not have one set of EU laws imposed, as the closer integration EU desires. Separate nations should have control of their own laws and not have to pass demands from outside, or else have to cope with infraction proceedings.
Naomi...because you said "Ummmm. They can voice their opinions when they're 18."
Ummmm, they can voice their opinions wherever they like, but we were talking about voting. They can't voice their opinions at the ballot box until they're 18.
I see there is a mini thread regarding the European concept of happily renting one's home9(mostly private landlords, though one may ask just who does own the properties), and the peculiar trait of the British to aspire to own your own home. ( an Englishman's home is his castle and all that) Now perhaps we in UK are a little more wary of our near neighbours, and the influx of immigrants into some areas, because we don't have the option to quickly just move on, but have to go to the trouble of selling and buying again.
"They can't voice their opinions at the ballot box until they're 18"

Not entirely accurate as it happens, not across the UK perhaps, but in more enlightened corners (where the SNP can grab them young with tales o' Brigadoon and oil) they can.

Sneaky.
I have just remembered this. It was written by Charles Sykes and used by Bill Gates in a speech to graduates in the USA a number of years ago.
RULE 1
Life is not fair - get used to it.
RULE 2
The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
RULE 3
You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with car phone, until you earn both.
RULE 4
If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.
RULE 5
Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping they called it Opportunity.
RULE 6
If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
RULE 7
Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
RULE 8
Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
RULE 9
Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.
RULE 10
Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
RULE 11
Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Bertram although it's not your own words I couldn't resist giving you best answer because it's spot on.
I'd hardly call giving kids the vote in the hope that they'd vote for you, "enlightened" Douglas. More a cynical political ploy that society will find difficult to correct. It's a form of gerrymandering, except instead of changing physical borders/limits, it's changing age related ones.
