Whether or not one agrees with this, the woman should have known the law, just as a bikini wearing Western woman should know an Islamic country's laws.

People are forgetting that the situation is tense in the south of France, France gnerally in fact. Only a few weeks ago a murderer with possible Islamist motives drove a lorry through a crowd of people in Nice. I don't blame the authorities for wanting to minimise overt displays of affiliation to Islam in a French seaside resort at the current time. The...

/// No one would bat an eyelid because I'm white and don't look like a potential
terrorist. ///

That is exactly the point, by breaking the law and wearing that particular garment she is announcing that she is a potential Muslim terrorist.

Just the same reaction if you took a banned dog for a walk in the park, would you not also be expected to be arrested.

Even if your dog wasn't a banned type there are certain other dog breeds that the general public are wary of.
Wow...I can't comment on that.
AOG - //That is exactly the point, by breaking the law and wearing that particular garment she is announcing that she is a potential Muslim terrorist. //

Seriously?

I would suggest that if this woman wanted to 'announce that she is a potential terrorist' - and that notion is too laughable to take seriously, but let's run with it - she would be somewhat more proactive about it!

Anyone who wants to noticed, which is the core raison d'etre of terrorism, would be doing something rather more radical than lying down dozing on the sand!

// Just the same reaction if you took a banned dog for a walk in the park, would you not also be expected to be arrested. //

People take banned dogs out in public to look hard, not to get arrested!!!

// Even if your dog wasn't a banned type there are certain other dog breeds that the general public are wary of. //

Yes, making the public wary is the idea - not looking to get arrested.

/// Excellent BA by the way aog. ///

Thank you jb good job we know what BA stands for, those rose-tinted specs have a lot to answer for.
I think the majority of ABers know what 'BA' stands for and why it is awarded.

I still cannot see why a lady in leggings, loose top and small cap caused so much furore.

Eh! you are quite correct, there is one who likes to have the last word.

Sorry I can't award your 12:37 post as BA since I have earlier awarded you, but I know you will know what those initials stand for.

andy-hughes, I didn't understand your reference to the best answer either.
France 'burkini ban': Court to decide on beach fines

Seems this new by-law is to be tested in Court. Perhaps now we will now a definition of a Burkini.

//I still cannot see why a lady in leggings, loose top and small cap caused so much furore//

And why has no one explained this? She seemed to have quite ordinary western clothing on...NOT a Burkini.
Pasta, I guess we have to accept that not everyone sees things the same - if on the beach I would scarcely be bothered about what someone else was wearing or why.

Anyway, I've been in enough bother on here today.
Mamy...some people have a real need to be offended and if there is nothing much to get offended about, they make one up.
Mamya...some are too wrapped up in potential threats etc and can't be bothered with basics,as,after all...it was supposedly this woman's clothing that led to her public exposure.
Bother?...never you mamya...;-)
Mikey, being offended isn't the issue .... but I'm sure you were told that earlier. Perhaps you missed it.
I'm no better than I ought to be, as the saying goes ;-)
mikey,
You've always been a big fan of polls, what do you make of this one?:

https://www.rt.com/news/357175-france-burkini-muslims-second/

As for the Mayor, hear hear.
ChillDoubt, interesting link - I'll tell you what drew my attention. The photo of a very elegantly dressed lady at the top with a link to 'Madamme BK of Paris'.

Looking at their website, lots of lovely garments are 100% made in France.

Wonder if they are going to close down businesses and put people out of work too ?

Idle curiosity on my part but interesting all the same.

I'm glad to see that 30% in the poll (of 1,001) were indifferent to the ban and 6% against it.
Oddly, I was more heartened that 64% supported it, but each to their own I guess.
Well yes, I have never been used to following the masses - got me in bother all my life but I've made it through thus far.
