It is easy to say they are crazy, evil.
But that doesn't really explain what makes them tick (no pun intended).
He is right that to come to a rational answer for the irrational acts of religious violence, we need to try and see it from their point of view. That does not mean taking their side or exonerating them from blame. But it does mean looking at why someone who apparently believes in god can do horrendous acts of violence on others, and do murderous suicide. Writing them off as loonies doesn't really get to the core of the problem, or trying to solve it.
But that doesn't really explain what makes them tick (no pun intended).

Every point of view will be individual and different. Welby, as a religious man, is trying to understand it from that perspective. It doesn't necessarily mean it wrong. He might think your point of view is erroneous. At least he is trying to make sense of the senseless rather than dismissing it as just madness that madmen do.

But he is not understanding it from a religious perspective. He just thinks he is. He talks about religious literacy. If he possessed that he would have a clearer understanding of the mindset he claims - but fails - to comprehend.

That approach is exactly what keeps us in the current state of terrorism and 'war on terror' to use President Bush's laughable an inaccurate (but great vote-catching!) phrase!
Muslim extremists are here, and they are not going away any time soon, so we have two choices.
We can treat them like some sort of alien species and try (and fail) to destroy them, which simply adds fuel to their argument that the West hates them, and produces an ever-decreasing vicious circle.
Or we can attempt to understand what motivates them, which can be positive step towards trying to get them to stop what they are doing.
Let's face it, stubbornly treating terrorists like monsters (which they are, but they don't think they are) simply re-enforces their notion that we are the evil party. So a level of understanding has to be worth a try - it can't make things any worse.

My understanding of the TA's objection is that graphic film of a terrorist atrocity is unsuitable for children of that age - a view with which I entirely concur.
That has of course been hijacked to be motivated by some sort of 'embarrassment' that the deaths were caused by Muslims, which is frankly farcical, and says more about those who wish to gain anti-Muslim support for their views.
We need to educate our war-mongering politicians before we educate children - they are the ones sending planes and soldiers.
