OK, so IMHO religion is the root of most evil but lets forget that bit because what I am trying to understand is why there seems to be one rule for one and another for a certain other religion we all have to bend ovcer backwards to accommodate?

Islay at 09:44, I don't 'do' offence.
Zac,as i said earlier, Tesco & the likes sell wines, beers, she knew that when she started, she had the choice whether to take the job, what will they be moaning about next, selling durex?
//Ergo, they failed to comply with their side of the concession agreement. //

How did they "fail to comply with their side of the concession agreement"? Why did the girl not just ask for assistance from a colleague? Are you insisting that Tesco had not advised her that this was the proper response to her traumatic dilemma?
I had better go and do a bit of shopping as I have promised. I may even nip into Tesco and pick up a bottle of vino. See if I can spot a Muslim till operator. (^_*)
TWR, condoms - wouldn't that be followers of the Catholic faith??
TWR, I think you'd better catch up with the debate.
Togo..get me a loaf and five fishes please !!! for I have miracles to perform !

Islay - that is obviously the appropriate outcome.

It's clear that some uppity foreigner has got ideas above her station,

Is she a foreigner?
Ninefingers, //condoms - wouldn't that be followers of the Catholic faith??//

Debateable. There have been instances where Muslim pharmacy assistants have refused to serve prescription birth control pills.
Naomi, I was aiming a little tongue in cheek. I didn't know of objections to that as well, whatever next one wonders!
Whatever the employers let them?
Togo - ////Ergo, they failed to comply with their side of the concession agreement. //

They failed because it must be clear that the company agreed that this employee would not be required to handle alcohol,. and then they put her in a position where she would have to handle alcohol - that is a failure on the part of the company.

//Why did the girl not just ask for assistance from a colleague? //

I have absolutely no idea, you'd have to ask her that question.

// Are you insisting that Tesco had not advised her that this was the proper response to her traumatic dilemma? //

I am not 'insisting' on anything. I have no idea what Tesco's policy is in this situation, nor if it was advised to this employee or not, or if she complied with it or not.

In order to answer those questions, I would need to know the policy, if it was advised to her, and if she followed it, and since I was not there, I can't answer you.

// May even nip into Tesco and pick up a bottle of vino. See if I can spot a Muslim till operator. (^_*) //

If you can determine someone's religious affiliation by standing at their checkout, then you are obviously wasted on here!

But if you do determine that your checkout operative is indeed a Muslim, there will be no issue, because by operating a checkout, they will have confirmed that they have no issue with handling and serving alcohol.
Ninefingers, you can add some cheeses to the list. ;o)

Of course she is a foreigner, they all are! You're not suggesting that Islam is a 'British' religion are you???

Sheesh!
?
Oh that will be easy, I will just ask the security guard. You know so as not to find myself in an awkward situation, then obviously use that very till or the kiosk. :))
andy-hughes at 10:04, time to take a breather perhaps.
i think we should all agree to disagree now as this is becoming very tiresome and a bit silly... have we not things to be getting on with ??
TWR - //Zac,as i said earlier, Tesco & the likes sell wines, beers, she knew that when she started, she had the choice whether to take the job, what will they be moaning about next, selling durex? //

The entire crux of this issue, and this debate, is that this employee appears to have had an agreement with her employers whereby she would not be required to handle or serve alcohol.

That means that regardless of whatever else her check-out colleagues do, she was exempted from that particular aspect of check-out protocol, which is why she was not employed as a check-0ut operative.

The issue arose because someone took alcohol to the kiosk where she worked, not to a check-out.

I must confess that my irony bank was due a quick deposit, I will have a quick coffee and a lie down!
