As I understand it Mr. Froome crashed out on one of the very early stages. In any other sport this would see him finished in the event (especially as he had to get a new bike). But in the T de F he gets up, brushes himself off and wins the entire thing.
Another thing I don't understand is why they have t route the race over hills and mountains. There are plenty of flat areas where they could run the race (Northern France or Holland - the French have no compunction in allowing their race to exercise incursions into other countries - including the UK - thus making it the "Tour de Europe".
It's all very strange and doesn't do much to enhance the image of the sport as being sane or sensible.

Indeed! What a mindset, what an ethos.
Good job he wasn't a Premier League footballer or he'd have been stretchered away after his first puncture!
Geraint Thomas rode most of the TdF one year with a fractured pelvis. Nice to have sportsmen we can be proud of from time to time.

"I will assume you are joking judge."
If I answered that, 3Ts, my mystery and mystique would be destroyed forever :-)
What I mean by him crashing, CD, is that as a result of that he needed a new bike. Surely the idea of the race is to test man and machine. If the machine gets mangled beyond quick repair then that's that, surely?

in the very early days of the TDF judge it was just that, they were not allowed any assistance and had to fix their own problems:
