Looks Like Sainsburys Are Not Selling Fireworks This Year
No link as they seem to want to keep it low profile but it looks like Sainsburys have taken the decision not to sell fireworks this year. If you or someone you know are affected by the constant barrage of noise, mess and smoke that happens at this season (and when did Firework Night become Firework season?) then you might like to comment on their facebook page or website? Hopefully another step in the right direction.

Much as I would love to say something to spath, I realise it would be a complete waste of time so I won't waste my time and energy. This is just to let anyone know who might be interested in contacting Sainsburys. I wrote them an email to congratulate them for taking this stance, but unfortunatel y, it has come back as having the wrong email address. I left the s off so...

Not just due to that Spath. For a variety of reasons. The fact is they are dangerous in the wrong hands. There is no earthly reason why it is necessary for Joe Public to be able to buy these things. "Because I want to" is not really a good enough reason. Fireworks are freely available for any numpty to purchase without checks or balances or licences.
You cant even buy decent rat poison these days unless you've been on a course and have got the right certificate. Why? Because in the wrong hands it's dangerous stuff. But you can buy fireworks with your weekly shop!!

So are knifes, motorbikes and lighters.

I actually think that's the only reason necessary.
"But you can buy fireworks with your weekly shop!!"
You need to be over 18. Also, anyone who has a serious harmful intention with fireworks could surely make their own explosives at home?
I get your points though, but i feel if people have bad intentions those intentions will still shine.

spath - // "Spath what you are saying is its not a major problem to you!"
No, what i'm saying is.. it's not a major problem to life as we know it or to our survival as a species or in fact to society as a whole. //
Very few things are, and they are not what we are debating, we are talking about fireworks - either you have an interest in the debate, or you don't, but distracting it with that kind of comment doesn't advance the debate in any way.

Shops, supermarkets / garden centres instigated the problem of fireworks in the first place. At one time they weren't on sale until about 2 weeks before November the 5th, and they where never on sale at Christmas time, or Haloween. There are now shops, especially garden centres were you can buy them all year round. So they started the craze, so up to them to stop it. Or are the profits to tempting.?
spath - // It's not actually it's a very similar comparison. Random loud noises and bangs, with some flashy lights. //
I'll be happy to offer the benefit of the doubt and assume you are just winding people up, because to compare a few 'loud noises and flashy lights' with indiscriminate enemy bombing designed to destroy houses and factories and burn and maim civilians is a comparison that's either a bad taste wind-up, or the ramblings of a dseluded mind - neither of which are helping the debate.
//The populous has no choice but to accept that people let off fireworks. //
Of course it has a choice - at the moment there is insufficient public will to persuade a change in the law, but that may well occur in the future, but be assured, the public always has a choice about things that affect everyone.
// If and when but mainly IF fireworks become illegal for personal use then i will partly understand why but i'l also feel that life has even more restrictions and limitations on it. //
Restrictions and limitations are necessary to allow society to function as a happy and cohesive unit. That's why it restricts me from smashing high street windows or playing my favourite Zeppelin tracks at volume 11 at four in the morning.
With any freedom comes responsibility, and the entertainment of fireworks needs to be balanced with the greater good of the population.
// I think the police has more important things to deal with than people getting upset about some noise before 11pm. //
It's not an either /or situation, but since you bring it up, I think ambulance crews and emergency surgeons have better things to do that stitching up wounds and amputating fingers off people too stupid to handle fireworks properly, and I guarantee that the fire service have better things to do that attending burning houses for the same reason, but that's what society undertakes to allow at the moment, in the name of 'fun and entertainment'.

I wish, Teacake. It's ridiculous wasteful tat for the most part and I'll bet most of it is in landfill within 10 days.
Spath, I take your point about people with nefarious motives. I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about idiots.
Knives, lighters and motorbikes have practical every day uses. They are a necessity. Plus you have to have acquired a certain level of competence to ride a motorbike. (Although some of the idiots I have seen round here sometimes make me doubt that).
Fireworks are for entertainment purposes only. And if you are that concerned about being entertained by them you can go to a big organised display run by professionals!

I don't think you are as monumentally selfish and stupid as your posts on this thread suggest - I think you think you are playing devil's advocate, but in fact you are not very good at it, you simply shoot out random wind-ups which annoy people.
If you believe that 'Because I want to ...' really is the only reason necessary, you'll understand if some of the more excitable members of the community come round to your house and try and knock some sense into you!
Because they want to!!!!!

No, because that actually is illegal, where as setting off fireworks isn't.
Doorstep intimidation isn't even comparable to a bit of noise pollution.
Why do humans do things? For financial benefit or because they want to. So much is harmful to society and the globe and animals (like one use plastic) yet it's not illegal? But that actually chokes and kills animals. A dog being scared of a loud bang? It's not even comparable.

You are busy falling into a very common fault in debating - the suggestion that because B is worse than A, that means that A is mitigated by being less than B, and therefore it doesn't matter if A continues, because B continues as well.
The reality is that B is worse than A, but that does not make A acceptable - both are negative to differing degrees, but one does not excuse the other.
