Are they desperate for votes, we can't vote in EU elections only the local ones and children fresh out of school will listen to their parents.

Old enough to marry without parental approval, I assume was meant.
*SO* only the date is at issue - 9th or 12th. What's the diff?

Well it isn’t going to happen this time.
Dec 9 or 12 then
I'm not fussed if 16-year-olds get to vote or not, but I do object to this nonsensical position that they are somehow not mature enough to form a balanced opinion about whom to vote for -- which, in any case, invariably means that "the impressionable *** will just vote for lefty parties and not the Tories like sensible chaps would". It's simultaneously insulting to youngsters and arrogant of adults. Not to mention the rather sad implication that people should be denied a vote because you aren't happy about who they'd vote for.

Voting should be linked to the definition of adulthood. At the moment that's 18 in most legal senses. Maybe it will change to 16 at some point. So what?

For the moment, at least, this is purely academic. It seems right that the voting age should be lowered to 16 only on its own merits, or not, if it comes up as part of a general package of election reforms, rather than as an amendment to an early election bill. As I understand it, that amendment has not been selected for debate.
mozz has it bang on, if you are a net contributor to the nation then you can vote simples.
The very factgthat a sixteen year old wants to marry is sufficient reason not to give them the vote.
most youngsters get out of the left wing education system largely left wing. It is only later when they acquire assets they start to see things differently. Stands to reason Jezza and co want the voting age as low as possible.
Exactly, Jim x. To a degree, ttt... although we also have people unable to contribute to taxes, and they should still be able to vote. Results affect the entire population and as many should be represented as possible, providing they understand.
If 16 year olds change their minds in 5 years, it doesn't matter- there will be a new lot of 16 year olds by then, who should be represented.
TTT, are pensioners net contributors?
Mozz doesn't have it at all. We all contribute, even kids buying sweets and toys can pay tax. Is the suggestion that 5 year olds get a vote ? Nonsense justification.

If someone is not old enough such that they can be tried as an adult in court for an offence, then clearly society consider them unable to think and act as an adult. (I note that if convicted at 18 and gaoled they are sent to a prison for 18 to 25-year-olds, suggesting 25 is the real age society considers them adults, and society is probably right.)
usually TCL, most of the ones I know are, if they are a net scrounger then they don't get to vote. The pension income they get should not be considered a "benefit" if it arises due to them paying the commensurate amount if NI. Clearly some refinements are needed but I think the principle is sound.
"Mozz doesn't have it at all. We all contribute, even kids buying sweets and toys can pay tax. Is the suggestion that 5 year olds get a vote ? Nonsense justification. " - obviously there will be an age limit too OG. Indirect tax is collected from money earned or money scrounged, if there is more of the latter than the former no vote, simples. Mozz apologies you may have further observations here but I'm answering as I would had I suggested the net contributor idea.
The idea you should only be allowed to vote if you are a net contributor to society is plainly bonkers.
Why not extra votes for those who contribute that little bit more ;-)
I don't see why poorer or people with disabilities should be ignored.

Shamima Begum.
shes only 16 and didn't know what she was doing.

Labour and snp, lets give 16 year olds the vote.

If thats the case why not put 16 year olds in an adult prison with adult sentences if they are mature enough to make adult decisions
ich: "The idea you should only be allowed to vote if you are a net contributor to society is plainly bonkers. " why? why is it so wrong that those who contribute decide how the nation is run?

They have been and 16year olds never have.
Because putting a 16 year old in an adult prison, is likely to make them worse and not better.
Question Author
but they can make an adult decision like voting.
